We’re Looking for a Few Good Volunteers!
Want to get involved at BJ? A core value of the BJ Community Covenant is Avodah (service). Help us live out our covenantal commitments and join the dozens of volunteers whose service to this community makes a difference every day. To learn more about these opportunities, contact Billie Di Stefano, Senior Manager of Adult Engagement.
Oneg Team: Join the team that makes our monthly onegs so fantastic! We are especially in need of volunteers to help with cleanup.
Shabbat Engagement Team: Are you the kind of person who thinks a stranger is just someone you haven’t met yet? Bring your warm and friendly smile to the Shabbat Engagement Team! Greet at Shabbat service and community dinners and connect with new folks.
Respite Dinners: This program serves immigrant families in the neighborhood on Thursday evenings; we need volunteers to help prep and serve dinner, play with kids, and clean up. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Rikers Island Visits: Participate in Jewish worship services on Rikers Island, bringing connection and spiritual uplift to individuals who are incarcerated.
Lawyers who want to help people in the criminal justice system: BJ’s partner, the Alliance of Families for Justice (AFJ), is in need of lawyers who can interface with the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to challenge intolerable prison conditions. Work may include writing letters on behalf of people who are being abused or have unaddressed needs, and/or meeting with incarcerated individuals to listen to their stories with an attorney’s ear to identify potential other legal concerns.
