Jewish Learning @ BJ

We are a community of seekers, looking to find deep meaning and purpose in the wisdom of our tradition. We wrestle with ancient sources and modern ideas, and in the process work to grow together intellectually and spiritually. We enthusiastically embrace learners at all stages of their journey into Jewish life and practice, from learning our first Hebrew letters to delving into centuries-old texts in their original language. We believe that the process of learning is as important as what we study, and we seek to make the experience one that is soulful, joyful, and communal.

Join BJ’s spiritual leaders, community members, and guest teachers in the practice of lifelong Jewish learning.

Omek: Judaism In-Depth

Looking to take your Jewish learning to the next level? Each three-part unit in this series uncovers the hidden intellectual, emotional, and spiritual depth of an aspect of Jewish life: the ethics of punishment and repentance, death and dying, and Jewish theologies.

The sessions in the first unit, What Does Teshuvah Take? Jewish Ethics of Punishment, Repentance, and Return, are led by Rabbi Alex Braver, Rabbi Hilly Haber (Central Synagogue Director of Social Justice and Organizing), and Rabbi Felicia Sol. Together, we’ll focus on Jewish textual sources and theoretical frameworks for how to restore people to community after wrongdoing, along with the realities of our criminal justice system through Rabbi Haber’s advocacy for, and experience working with, people incarcerated at Rikers Island. We’ll also explore personal “takeaways” about the meaning of teshuvah and restoration in our own lives.
