Preparing to Pray: The Basics of Shabbat Services

Preparing to Pray is a three-part learning series that invites you to explore the beauty, depth, and spiritual richness of Shabbat prayer at BJ. Through guided learning with Rabbi Becca Weintraub and Hazzan Ari Priven, we’ll engage the structure, themes, and melodies of Friday night and Shabbat morning services—uncovering how prayer works, why it moves us, and how it can open pathways to meaning and connection.

The first part of the series, Ignite your Friday Night Prayer, will focus on the Friday night services over the course of two sessions. In the second part of the series, Unpack the Shabbat Morning Service, the two sessions will focus on Shabbat morning services. The third part of the series, Explore the Music of Shabbat, includes two sessions on the melodies and music of each of the services. Whether you are a regular in services or seeking a renewed relationship with Shabbat prayer, these sessions offer tools, insight, and inspiration to deepen your experience.

When registering for Ignite your Friday Night Prayer or Unpack the Shabbat Morning Service, you are registering for both of the sessions, with the expectation that you will attend both. When registering for Explore the Music of Shabbat, you can choose to register for one or both of the sessions.
