Biography

Before joining BJ, Steven served as Assistant Vice President of Business Strategy and Planning at The New School, where he oversaw its continuing and professional education and global partnerships division. His seven-year tenure there included leading growth and partnership strategy, systems collaboration, merger and acquisition activities, executive and board engagement, and investment in business development. He also led the university’s safe return to campus during the COVID pandemic.

Prior to that, he worked in K-12 education strategy, planning, and operations. At the NYC Department of Education, he led school budget strategy, class size policy, and curriculum logistics. He oversaw operations including HR, organizational strategy, finance, and IT at EL Education, a national education reform nonprofit. Steven spearheaded education technology and process innovation at Uncommon Schools, a public charter school management organization. In the private sector, he was a business strategy consultant with IBM and operations advisor with Amplify, an education technology firm.

Steven received his BA in economics, political science, and music from Columbia; and his MS, focused on non-profit management strategy and education policy, from Hunter College. In his published undergraduate senior thesis and master’s capstone, he conducted significant research on the public support of the arts through crisis.

He has served on several Jewish and nonprofit boards, including Kehilat Hadar, media literacy, and education organizations.
