Operations Crew Member (Part-Time)

BJ is led by Rosh Kehilah and Senior Rabbi Felicia Sol and Executive Director Steven Melzer. The organization has an annual operating budget of $13 million, with approximately 80% from contributed revenue, and a staff of approximately 50 full-time and 10 part-time employees.
Position Overview
The Operations Crew Member plays a key role in ensuring the smooth execution of all programming, events, and building operations and will report to the Director of Program & Event Operations. This position is responsible for the setup and breakdown of events, general building maintenance, and supporting the Operations and Campus Operations teams as needed. The Operations Crew Member works collaboratively with colleagues, management, program staff, and the community to maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment.
Key Responsibilities
Event and Program Support
- Execute all programming across departments and functions, ensuring equipment and materials are in the right place at the right time.
- Set up and break down physical aspects of on-site religious services, programs, and events, including furniture, food and beverage supplies, and some A/V equipment as needed.
- Participate fully in High Holy Day season preparations and events.
- Serve as a point of contact for program staff and private rentals during events when directed.
Building Operations and Maintenance
- Perform general building maintenance including cleaning, stocking supplies, and keeping spaces neat and organized.
- Accept, distribute, and properly handle deliveries.
- Manage laundry and related maintenance tasks.
- Attend to minor facility issues and assist Campus Operations team with basic support as needed.
Teamwork and Professional Conduct
- Support building staff and collaborate with colleagues across departments.
- Establish and maintain positive work relationships with rabbis, management, program staff, community members (congregants), building tenants, and event attendees.
- Follow guidance from Operations Supervisor, Shift Leads, and Logistics Coordinator.
- Assist with other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the building and events.
Qualifications
- Ability to lift, move, and arrange furniture and equipment as required for events.
- Basic familiarity with event setups and building maintenance preferred.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Flexible schedule, including evenings and participation during high-volume periods (e.g., High Holy Days).
- Reliable, proactive, and detail-oriented.
Working Conditions
- Physical activity involved (lifting, moving furniture, setting up equipment).
- Fast-paced environment, especially during event-heavy periods.
- May require evening and weekend hours based on programming needs.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a part-time (up to 20 hours per week), non-exempt position with an hourly rate of $23. The role is not eligible for employer-sponsored benefits; however, employees may participate in the organization’s 403(b) retirement plan as per eligibility requirements. Employees accrue paid sick leave, up to a maximum of 40 hours per fiscal year, in accordance with applicable law. Following the completion of the probationary period, employees may request up to one week of unpaid vacation, subject to supervisory approval. Holidays are unpaid unless the employee is scheduled to work on the holiday.
