Punishment, Repentance, and Return—LeMa’aseh: Making it Real
All events in seriesLooking to take your Jewish learning to the next level? Each three-part unit in the Judaism In-Depth series uncovers the hidden intellectual, emotional, and spiritual depth of a familiar part of Jewish life.
The sessions in the first unit, What Does Teshuvah Take? Jewish Ethics of Punishment, Repentance, and Return, are led by Rabbi Alex Braver, Rabbi Hilly Haber (Central Synagogue Director of Social Justice and Organizing), and Rabbi Felicia Sol. Together, we’ll focus on Jewish textual sources and theoretical frameworks for how to restore people to community after wrongdoing, along with the realities of our criminal justice system through Rabbi Haber’s advocacy for, and experience working with, people incarcerated at Rikers Island. We’ll also explore personal “takeaways” about the meaning of teshuvah and restoration in our own lives.
Class sessions will be in person, with Zoom participation available. During our study, we’ll occasionally pause for some questions from the chat online.
