This summer, we are eager to join together in person (and virtually) to explore themes of climate change, the refugee crisis and immigration, Black culture and history, and the healing power of music. Sponsored by Panim: Social Action and Social Justice at BJ, this film series will highlight various social justice issues with relevant speakers and opportunities for conversations with community members. We hope you will join us and be inspired by the films and accompanying conversations.

Summer of Soul

Created by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, this powerful documentary highlights the Harlem Cultural Festival, which took place in the summer of 1969 (just one hundred miles south of Woodstock), whose footage was largely forgotten–until now. A celebration of Black history, culture and fashion, Summer of Soul shines a light on the importance of history and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present.

  • For those joining in person, doors will open at 6:45 PM and the film screening will begin at 7:00 PM.
  • For those watching from home, the film is available on Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime or YouTube with either a subscription or for a small fee. Then, join us virtually for our accompanying program at 9:00 PM.
  • Speakers to be announced.

Registration: In-person only

Admission will be $7 per event (or $15 for the whole series) for BJ members and $10 per event (or $25 for the whole series) for non-BJ members.
