Israeli Authors Discussion Group: Amal Elsana Alh’jooj
All events in seriesLed by BJ members Rabbi Carole Balin and Jennifer Sylvor, the Israeli Authors Discussion Group takes us on a journey of rich and thought-provoking Israeli literature. This month’s selection is Hope is A Woman’s Name: My Journey as a Bedouin Palestinian Activist in Israel, written by Amal Elsana Alh’jooj.
About the book
The fifth daughter in a patriarchal society and an indigenous Bedouin in a Jewish state, Amal Elsana came into this world fighting for her right to exist.
Through her lifelong efforts to promote policy change for Israel’s Bedouin, create economic empowerment programs for marginalized women, and champion shared society, Amal builds bridges; not by sacrificing her identity, but by embracing it. Today, Amal is a key shaper of public opinion on marginalized minorities in Israel, Canada, and other developing countries. Hope is a Woman’s Name is the story of her journey navigating interweaving systems of power and oppression—the patriarchal and the nationalist—in her fight for justice and equality.
Session Dates
This group meets on the third Thursday of the month.
