Aviv Pesah Walking Tour: Touring Sites of Enslavement in NYC
A week before Pesah, consider the legacies of enslavement as well as freedom here in the United States. Join Aviv for a tour of the Van Cortlandt house and park, one the best-preserved plantations in New York City. Come learn from BJ member and professor of history Adam Arenson about the history of Black and Native enslavement in Manhattan and beyond, BJ’s proslavery rabbi in the 1850s, and the slow and unsteady march to freedom and civil rights in the northern as well as southern states. Tour will involve taking the subway, walking inside and out, and stairs.
Please note, this event is intended only for the Aviv cohort (20s and 30s). We will meet at the BJ Community House, and leave no later than 12:45PM to walk to the 86th and Broadway station. The fees of this event, minus Subway fare, are covered by BJ. The tour will end no later than 5:00PM.
