Bringing the Sound of the Shofar to Every Member
Home Visits for Shofar Blowing
One of the central traditions of this season is hearing the sound of the shofar. To help make this experience available to all of our members, BJ is offering home visits for those who are homebound and unable to attend Rosh Hashanah services in person.
Visits will take place on the second day of Rosh Hashanah and during the days before Yom Kippur (September 13–18). During each visit, volunteers will sound the shofar and share a meaningful holiday moment.
To request a visit:
- Complete this form by September 9, 2026.
- If you have difficulty accessing the form, contact Paula Kramer Weiss.
- A volunteer will follow up to schedule your visit.
Please note: Home visits are available for members in Manhattan only.
Calling All Shofar Blowers
Help bring the sound of the shofar to homebound BJ members this High Holy Day season.
We’re looking for teens and adults to visit members between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, offering them the opportunity to fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the shofar.
Who can volunteer?
- Anyone with prior shofar-blowing experience
- Brass players who are willing to learn
- You do not need to be an expert!
If you’d like to participate, please complete this volunteer survey so we can match you based on your location and availability.
Before the holidays
All volunteers will gather to:
- Meet one another
- Review the tekiyot (shofar calls)
- Learn about the mitzvah together
Volunteers will be paired up and then matched with one or more homebound BJ members.
