Take a tour of the Sharing Excess operation at the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center in the Bronx, with the BJ Environmental Advocates. Hunts Point is the largest food distribution center in the US. It contains the largest wholesale produce market and the largest wholesale meat market in the US, and is also home to the Fulton Fish Market. The produce market supplies over 60% of the daily fresh produce for New York City.

Sharing Excess retrieves unsellable but salvageable food from market wholesalers—food that would otherwise go to landfill. After inspecting the food, it distributes produce that is still good to eat to more than 150 food pantries and other organizations that serve food-insecure New Yorkers. Founded in Philadelphia in 2018, Sharing Excess expanded to New York City two years ago and now distributes about a million pounds a month of whatever it can glean from the Hunts Point market.

BJ’s Environmental Advocates will be organizing carpooling for this event. We will reach out to attendees to coordinate carpooling once they are registered.
