Experience the ritual of Tashlikh, a symbolic casting away of the year’s hardships and misdeeds. Begin at the BJ Community House with parallel learning opportunities: the Family Life & Learning team will guide children and families, while the Rabbinic Fellows lead adults in reflection and preparation for the new year. Then, we’ll walk as a group to the Hudson River at 91st Street, where we’ll gather by the water at 6:10 PM for Tashlikh.

  • 5:45 PM: Walk to Hudson River
  • 6:10 PM: Intention-setting and Tashlikh ritual

While bread has traditionally been used for this ritual, it is actually harmful to the river’s ecosystem. Instead, we invite you to bring an eco-friendly alternative such as: chopped lettuce, grated carrots, dry oats (unsalted and unflavored), or small local pebbles. For more background and creative ideas, see this PJ Library article encouraging a bread-free Tashlikh.
