Monajat/The Nightingale of Iran: A Persian Selihot Concert
Launching a new season of the Micki Levin Concert Series, join us for an evening featuring Galeet Dardashti (vocalist/composer) as she, along with her live band, presents “Monajat.” Inspired by old recordings of her grandfather, Younes Dardashti (the most renowned Jewish singer in Iran’s history) singing the prayers of Selihot in Iran, in this concert Galeet reconnects with this Persian Jewish spiritual and musical tradition by composing around remixed samples of her grandfather (AKA, The Nightingale of Iran). Through a mix of traditional and contemporary sounds, and accompanying stunning video art, Galeet aims to honor and preserve her grandfather’s legacy.
The program begins with a multimedia presentation from Galeet and Danielle Dardashti (storyteller/documentarian) focused on their award-winning audio documentary, The Nightingale of Iran, which tells the story of their family.
Following the concert, Danielle and Galeet will conclude the event with an onstage discussion moderated by their sister, Rabbi Michelle Dardashti (Kane Street Synagogue in Brooklyn; 2009-2011 MTM Fellow at BJ) with the audience. The discussion will cover the making of the podcast, the historical and personal narratives it presents, and what they learned while creating the podcast.
Doors will open at 8:00 PM. Dessert and Selihot services to follow.
Registration is required to attend in person.
