Community-Wide Learning & Tashlikh
Experience the ritual of Tashlikh, a symbolic casting away of the year’s hardships and misdeeds. Begin at the BJ Community House with reflection and preparation for the new year led by the Rabbinic Fellows. Then, we’ll walk as a group to the Hudson River at 91st Street, where we’ll gather by the water at 6:10 PM for Tashlikh.

- 6:10 PM: Intention-setting and Tashlikh ritual
While bread has traditionally been used for this ritual, it is actually harmful to the river’s ecosystem. Instead, we invite you to bring an eco-friendly alternative such as: chopped lettuce, grated carrots, dry oats (unsalted and unflavored), or small local pebbles. For more background and creative ideas, see this PJ Library article encouraging a bread-free Tashlikh.
