The holiday of Sukkot has always reflected a mix of emotions: the joy of a productive harvest, and a recognition of vulnerability as the rainy season approaches. The sukkah itself expresses fragility, in its impermanence, but also the resilience of the Jewish people who have lived in conditions of fragility and vulnerability throughout our history–and who continue to survive and thrive.
No matter what is happening in the world around us, Sukkot is Z’man Simhateinu—the holiday of our joy—and we will again celebrate with community, which has been a great source of strength and resilience for so many of us this year. There is something for everyone in the Sukkah – come find your place, and experience the possibility of joy amidst the fragile nature of our lives.
The sukkah is a vulnerable structure, lacking the permanence of our homes—but its roof, the skhakh—is meant to remind us of the divine clouds of glory that protected our ancestors as they traveled through the wilderness. Join us for Sukkot this year, as we bring the joy and strength of communal celebration into our hearts.
