Sinaitic Ethics: The Hidden Significance of Shabbat Observance with Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller
Most people legitimately identify Shabbat as a religious practice – bein adam laMakom (between humans and God) – that celebrates God’s resting from creation on the seventh day. Pursuant to our analysis of the two versions of the ‘Ten Commandments’ (Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5) as well as passages from the prophets and from medieval and modern thinkers, this session will establish that Shabbat is in its essence and its origin a revolutionary social institution grounded in a fundamental humanistic ethic. The lecture is presented in honor of an outstanding religious humanist, Rabbi Roly Matalon.
Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller has been associated with Hillel for over 50 years and has celebrated forty years of working with students and faculty as the executive director of the Yitzhak Rabin Hillel Center for Jewish Life at UCLA. He is currently director emeritus. He was ordained in 1971 at Yeshiva University. Chaim has been a lecturer in the Departments of Sociology and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA and in the Department of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University. He is currently a faculty member of the Shalom Hartman Institute, North America and is an organizer for A Land for All in the US. He was a founding member of Americans or Peace Now. Chaim is the author most recently of The God of Possibilities: From Being to Becoming, ‘Twas the Best of Times, ‘Twas the Worst of Times: Antisemitism, Israel and the Politics of Resentment on the Campus Today, and A Return to a Zionism for the Future.
