SUMMARY:Justice in Action: Secular Education and the Ultra-Orthodox and Chassidic Communities
DESCRIPTION:BJ is a co-sponsor of this monthly series\, hosted by the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan. \nThousands of Jewish children attending Ultra-Orthodox and Chassidic yeshivas are being denied a basic education. This fact has now been confirmed by the findings in the New York City Department of Education’s report on their lengthy yeshiva investigation that was routinely stalled due to politics. \nPlease join JCC Social Justice Activist in Residence Ruth Messinger for a discussion on this important topic and the current efforts to bring about the changes necessary to ensure a basic education for all children in our city. She will be joined by Yaffed’s founder and executive director\, Naftuli Moster\, who is a yeshiva graduate himself; Beatrice Weber\, whose son attends a Chassidic yeshiva; and Jamie Hooper\, a private school teacher and parent. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Chanukah Learning with Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller
DESCRIPTION:“The Chanukah Story You Were Never Taught: What Really Happened 167-164 B.C.E” \nTuesday\, November 24 | 8:00-9:30PM \nThrough a careful reading of the historical sources presented in Maccabees I and II\, we will reconstruct the circumstances that occasioned the Maccabeean revolt – a civil war and/or a response to Antiochus’ persecution. Further study will reveal how the victors celebrated the first Chanukah as well as the theological meaning attributed to the liberation and rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. We will also consider the ultimate consequences of the establishment of the Hasmonean kingdom and its long-term implications for the politics of the rabbinic tradition. \nThe session will include sources that establish a Jewish case for reparations as well as a plea for our active involvement in advocating for racial justice and for foundational social and structural change at this moment of national crisis. \n  \n“On the Radical Reframing of the Chanukah Miracle: From Military Victory to the Light of Peace” \nTuesday\, December 8 | 8:00-9:30PM \nAn immersive study of Maimonides’ presentation of the Chanukah celebration. We will see how the faithful rationalist radically transforms the miracle story and turns the classic understanding of Chanukah on its head in a spiritual direction. A taste of modern Israeli poetry will illustrate the effort to recast the ancient holiday back again into a military guise that is compatible with the self-image and mythos of contemporary Israel. \n  \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Prepare My Prayer with Rabbi Roly Matalon
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Roly Matalon to study and discuss the inspirational sources and suggestions in Rabbi Dov Singer’s book Prepare My Prayer: Recipes to Awaken the Soul. \n“The main purpose of the book is to expand the idea of prayer beyond the known boundaries of the synagogue and the prayer book\, and to look at the different faces of prayer and its reflections in reality. To awaken the inner spring from which prayer flows and to rejuvenate the words printed in the prayer book. To revive the set prayers\, and to discover the prayers that are not printed in the prayer book. To recognize prayer as a kind of state of being\, of presence\, in which a praying person stands before that which is Presence itself\, and strengthens the awareness of the beating heart of the world.” \nRabbi Dov Singer\, head of Yeshivat Makor Chaim and the Study Center for Renewal\, is an educational innovator and a leader of the modern Israeli revival of Hassidut. \nFor BJ members only. \n \nParticipants are required to purchase Rabbi Dov Singer’s book to follow along with during the class.

SUMMARY:Israeli Authors Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Every first Thursday of the month\, this group will discuss a book written by an Israeli author\, facilitated by BJ members Carole Balin and Jennifer Sylvor. What a list we have for you this year! This group is drop in; the Zoom link is applicable for the entire series\, so join us each month as your schedule allows. \nRegister to Join Us on Zoom\nHot off the (translated) presses\, Aquarium is an incredible story of two Deaf sisters\, raised in seclusion by Deaf parents\, and the shattering consequences that unfold when that isolation comes to an end. Sly\, surprising and as sharp-fanged as its protagonists\, Aquarium has been called “a stunning debut that interrogates the practices of storytelling — and storyhearing.”
