SUMMARY:Prepare My Prayer with Rabbi Roly Matalon
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Roly Matalon to study and discuss the inspirational sources and suggestions in Rabbi Dov Singer’s book Prepare My Prayer: Recipes to Awaken the Soul. \n“The main purpose of the book is to expand the idea of prayer beyond the known boundaries of the synagogue and the prayer book\, and to look at the different faces of prayer and its reflections in reality. To awaken the inner spring from which prayer flows and to rejuvenate the words printed in the prayer book. To revive the set prayers\, and to discover the prayers that are not printed in the prayer book. To recognize prayer as a kind of state of being\, of presence\, in which a praying person stands before that which is Presence itself\, and strengthens the awareness of the beating heart of the world.” \nRabbi Dov Singer\, head of Yeshivat Makor Chaim and the Study Center for Renewal\, is an educational innovator and a leader of the modern Israeli revival of Hassidut. \nFor BJ members only. \n \nParticipants are required to purchase Rabbi Dov Singer’s book to follow along with during the class.

SUMMARY:Torah from Israel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a new Sunday morning learning program following Morning Minyan. Sessions will be led by a rabbi or a prominent partner or friend of BJ\, who will teach a monthly Torah class live from Israel. Each class will touch on a different topic that has been carefully chosen by the teacher to create an opportunity for enrichment and learning. \nThis month\, Rabbi Dr. Rani Jaeger will speak on the topic\, “The Question of the Upcoming Israeli Election—an Unexpected Answer.” The legendary mayor of Tel Aviv and founder of the political party “the Israelis” was asked about the name he chose for his party. What was his answer? How does that help us understand the undercurrents of the Israeli political arena? \nRegister Now\nDr. Rani Jaeger is a research fellow\, faculty member\, and head of the recently formed Ritual Center at the Shalom Hartman Institute. He was one of the founders of the Institute’s Be’eri Program for Pluralistic Jewish-Israeli Identity Education. Rani received his doctorate from Bar-Ilan University on Jewish-Israeli culture as perceived by the poet Avraham Shlonsky. He was a participant in the first cohort of the Beit Midrash for Israeli Rabbis and received rabbinical ordination from the Shalom Hartman Institute and HaMidrasha at Oranim in September 2016. Rani is one of the founders of Beit Tefilah Israeli\, a secular synagogue in the heart of Tel Aviv. He spent a year at Paideia\, the European Institute of Jewish Studies in Stockholm\, as scholar in residence.

SUMMARY:Everyday Moral Dilemmas
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays with Hadar—Unit 3 \nEveryday Moral Dilemmas with Rabbi Avi Strausberg \nWrestle with everyday moral dilemmas\, the sorts of which we each encounter all of the time in our lives\, through the lens of traditional Jewish texts. In this course\, we’ll consider questions like: “If and when is it okay to shame someone else for the sake of protecting another\,” and “Are there instances in which it is not only permissible to lie but in fact necessary?” \nWe’ll pose these everyday moral dilemmas to classic Jewish sources and see what\, if any wisdom\, they have to offer us when confronted with these questions. In doing so\, we’ll attempt to not only answer the dilemmas before us but suggest a model for what it might look like to turn to Jewish texts for guidance on pressing questions of our times. \nThis unit is free for BJ members\, and $60 for non-members. \n \n
