SUMMARY:The Price of Whiteness: Jews\, Race and American Identity
DESCRIPTION:What has it meant to be Jewish in a nation defined by the categories of Black and white? Are American Jews with light skin (including most Ashkenazi Jews of European descent) members of a vulnerable minority group or part of the privileged white majority? Or both? This discussion\, hosted by The Joseph Stern Center for Social Responsibility and B’nai Jeshurun\, will examine the uneasy place Jews have held in America’s racial culture since the late nineteenth century\, and also ask what role they have to play in today’s movements for racial justice. The conversation will be led by Eric Goldstein\, Ph.D.\, and will focus on the experience of Jews whom America’s racial culture has come to identify as white. \nRegister Now\nEric Goldstein is the Judith London Evans director of the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies at Emory University\, where he is also associate professor of history and Jewish studies. He is the author of The Price of Whiteness: Jews\, Race\, and American Identity (Princeton University Press\, 2006) and\, with Deborah R. Weiner\, On Middle Ground: A History of the Jews of Baltimore (Johns Hopkins Press\, 2018). He is a former editor of the quarterly scholarly journal American Jewish History. \nCosponsored by The Center for Jewish Living.

SUMMARY:Jewish Genealogy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Connections for this workshop led by Rabbi Scott Kalmikoff\, a genealogist from New York City who has spent the past 14 years exploring his roots\, building his family tree and meeting relatives around the world.  \nBy walking you through the steps he took to conduct his personal genealogical research\, Rabbi Scott will teach you the methodology of searching for records & documents\, analyzing them & using the information they contain to build your family tree. The workshop gives you an overview of online Jewish genealogical resources so you can use them from the comfort of your home. \nRabbi Scott’s hope is to excite you about genealogy & empower you to conduct the research on your own. For Rabbi Scott\, genealogy isn’t just a hobby or profession. Genealogy is a wonderful journey of personal exploration & self discovery. While learning about our ancestors we learn about ourselves. While learning about our history we connect with & deepen our Jewish identities. Jewish history & our families’ stories are our story & deeply influence who we are today in ways we may never fully comprehend. Genealogical research provides us with a precious gift we can pass to the next generation\, L’Dor VaDor. \nThis is a two part series and participants are required to register for both sessions\, which will be recorded. \nThis program is generously sponsored by Susan Viuker Lieberman. \nRegister Now
