SUMMARY:A Conversation with Jeremy Borison: Queer and Jewish Representation in Media
DESCRIPTION:Aviv is excited to invite the entire BJ community to a drive deeper this Pride month through a conversation with Rabbinic Fellow Grace Gleason and Jeremy Borison about Queer Jewish representation in media. \nRegister Now \nJeremy Borison is a director and writer originally from Cleveland\, Ohio now based in Los Angeles. After working as an assistant on shows at Fox\, MTV\, and Showtime and as an Associate Producer and Assistant Director on commercials and music videos for artists such as Chvrches\, Ty Dolla $ign\, and Tritonal\, Jeremy began working as a Director for music and dance videos for local artists in Los Angeles\, as well as directing narrative films that explore his duality as both a religious and queer filmmaker. Jeremy has participated in various programs that explore art and religious identities\, as an Asylum Arts Fellow\, a writer for JerusalemU\, and a participant of the Start South art therapy program in S’derot. He is currently in pre-production for his new film\, Unspoken\, which follows the story of a closeted teenager in a religious community who discovers a love letter from before the Holocaust\, written to his grandfather by another man. \nGrace Gleason is a fourth-year rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Prior to rabbinical school\, she pursued her love of Talmud at SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva\, Yeshivat Hadar\, and the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies. She served in many settings as a teacher and prayer leader\, including as a fellow at Mishkan Chicago. Originally from Chicago\, she completed her B.A. in interdisciplinary studies at the University of Chicago in 2014.

SUMMARY:Spring Benefit: HaHa! A Hesed and Humor Affair
DESCRIPTION:An evening of virtual fun and fundraising in honor of BJ’s volunteer heroes\, hosted by Judy Gold\, two-time Emmy Award winner\, comedian\, writer\, BJ member. All are welcome. \nHaHa! A Hesed and Humor Affair honors BJ volunteer groups that addressed particular community needs arising as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Represented groups include teens and young families\, as well as volunteers in areas including vaccination\, Bikkur Holim\, the Judith Bernstein Lunch Program\, Havurot\, Minyan\, and many more! \nHesed means lovingkindness. It is how we take care of each other. It is the safety net that catches us when we fall. It is phone calls before Shabbat\, holiday visits to the homebound\, and cooking for a shiva or a new baby. Hesed is our best Jewish selves caring for our community. \nFunds raised will fuel our efforts to pivot from a pandemic era\, remote-only existence to a reimagined\, hybrid approach—to worship\, to prayer\, to programming\, to learning\, and more. We are so grateful for the dedicated work of our assemblage of member and non-member volunteers and for your support of this event in their honor. Many thanks for your generosity! \nWatch now\nSupport this event by donating now\n	\n\n\n \nJudy Gold has had stand-up specials on HBO\, Comedy Central\, and LOGO. She has written and starred in two critically acclaimed\, Off-Broadway hit shows: The Judy Show – My Life as a Sitcom (Outer Critics Circle Nomination) and 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother (GLAAD Media Award – Outstanding NY Theater\, Drama Desk Nomination – Actor). Judy received rave reviews as Gremio in The Public Theater’s all female production of The Taming of The Shrew for Shakespeare in the Park. She also co-starred in Off-Broadway’s Clinton! The Musical\, and Disaster! The Musical. \nJudy plays the role of Chaya on FX’s Better Things. She guest starred on CBS’ Madame Secretary and on the Showtime series I’m Dying Up Here. She has had recurring roles Netflix’s Friends from College and TBS’ Search Party. Judy is the host of the hit podcast\, Kill Me Now. She has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Tonight Show. From 1999-2010\, Judy was the host of HBO’s At the Multiplex with Judy Gold. Judy also won two Emmy awards for writing and producing The Rosie O’Donnell Show. \nJudy has made numerous appearances on The View\, The Today Show\, The Wendy Williams Show\, and The Steve Harvey Show. She often pops up on The Food Network\, but please do not mention Chopped All Stars to her\, or Rachel vs. Guy for that matter. Judy’s newest comedy album\, Conduct Unbecoming\, and her previous albums\, Kill Me Now and Judith’s Roommate Had a Baby are available wherever you get your music. \nShe can be seen in the recent FX Documentary Hysterial. Judy Gold is the author of Yes I Can Say That – When They Come for the Comedians We’re All in Trouble\, released July 2020 by Dey Street Books. \nHONOREE GROUPS\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n	\n SUMMARY:Torah from Israel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Sunday morning learning program following Morning Minyan. Sessions will be led by a rabbi or a prominent partner or friend of BJ\, who will teach a monthly Torah class live from Israel. Each class will touch on a different topic that has been carefully chosen by the teacher to create an opportunity for enrichment and learning. \nThis month\, Dr. Yael Avrahami will give a shiur (teaching) on\, “The Torah and Disabilities: What can we learn about the Bible and about ourselves?” \n“You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind" (Leviticus 19:14). This famous decree is often recalled when talking about disabilities in Judaism. It places a moral and practical demand from the reader\, but does the Torah itself obey this rule? In this session of Torah from Israel\, we will examine how biblical stories present their disabled characters; what disabilities symbolizes in biblical poetic texts; and where the disabled are mentioned in biblical law. Proceeding from the ancient representation\, we will ask in what ways biblical lore about disabilities has influenced us\, and how we can reread these texts through our own sensibilities. \nRegister Now\nDr. Yael Avrahami is a Biblical Studies professor at Oranim: Academic College of Education\, and a Fulbright alumnus. She holds a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from the University of Haifa and an M.A. in Comparative Religion from the Hebrew University. Yael is the author of The Senses of Scripture: Sensory Experience in the Hebrew Bible\, for which she won the Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise. She is also a co-author of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia: A Reader’s Edition. Her studies focus on Socio-cultural interpretation\, Semantics\, and Inner biblical interpretation. She is mostly interested in the windows that ancient texts open for us into ancient cultures and minds. She is also amazed by the extent to which reading ancient texts can improve our understanding of contemporary cultures and minds.
