SUMMARY:Bring Home The Light: A Collage Workshop for Hanukkah
DESCRIPTION:Join BJ member and collage artist\, Michal Nachmany\, for a Zoom workshop in collage art. Each person or family will be invited to create a collage centered on the promise that in dark times\, even small actions can add light to the future generations of our family community.  \nImagine the lives and hard beginnings of our parents and grandparents\, who lit just a ‘small candle’ to allow us to live a life of joy in New York.  As such\, you may use old family images (copies)\, past and presence\, in your collage\, mapping a journey from yesteryear to 2021. You may use old images (newspaper and magazine clips\, photos\, old recipes\, envelopes and letters\, postcards\, etc.) as elements in your collage.  \nNachmany’s artistic motto is\, “Every Person and Every Object Has a Journey.” Think about the journeys of these images and objects and create a story using them. \nRegister Now\nMichal Nachmany is self-taught mixed-media and collage artist who has exhibited in solo shows in the U.S.\, Taiwan\, and Poland. She is also an educator who teaches modern and liturgical Hebrew in rabbinical schools\, synagogues\, and elsewhere. Nachmany grew up in Jerusalem\, where the mixture of cultures\, people\, architecture\, objects\, colors\, sounds\, and smells from the streets and the markets of Jerusalem shaped her awareness of the past as a foundation of the present. In recent years she had opportunities to exhibit in multiple locations in New York City and nearby. She also had two international exhibitions\, one in Taiwan and another in Poland. Learn more about her work on her website.  \n  \nHow to prepare: \n\nA base\, either a wood panel (see link to purchase below)\, or any hard cardboard that you might have around the house (12” x 12”)\nGlue stick (such as UHU)\nScissors\nCopies of pictures of family’s history\, old newspapers\, receipts\, letters\, magazine pictures\, etc. – Select 5-8 images to be used on the collage\nOptional: paints\, color pencils\, stencils\, etc.\n[If interested\, reach out to Michal for a more detailed step-by-step instruction about the art of collage]\n\n\nWhere to buy: \n\nWood panels – package of 3 \nGlue stick: such as UHU (package of 3)

SUMMARY:Reimagining: Criminal Justice\, Policing\, and Security
DESCRIPTION:As we spend this shemita (Sabbatical) year imagining new possibilities for our society’s entrenched challenges\, we invite you to a three part series exploring the following questions: What does a truly safe\, and truly just\, society look like? What courageous conversations are needed to untangle and re-envision the interrelated topics of criminal justice reform\, policing\, and security? \nJoin Andy Potter\, founder of One Voice and director of the Michigan Corrections Organization\, and Ronald Simpson-Bey\, a leader in the criminal justice reform movement with JustLeadershipUSA\, for a courageous conversation about our nation’s prison system. \nOne Voice founder and former corrections officer\, Andy Potter connected with JustLeadershipUSA’s Ronald Simpson-Bey who is now a leader in the criminal justice reform movement but who served time in MI’s prisons when Andy worked in those same prisons. Both the formerly incarcerated and the former officers know a language\, an experience and even a world – the world inside a prison – that most of us won’t ever know. As Andy and Ronald are both trying to bring the voices of those most impacted to the criminal justice reform table\, they have taken the bold step of coming together so that their shared experiences can help to transform a broken system. \nRegister Now  \nThis first program in the series will focus on national level policy and systems; the second part in the series will explore policing and security in New York City; and the third aspect will be an opportunity for BJ members to engage in small group facilitated conversations about how we address these issues in our own community. Stay tuned for details and dates.
