SUMMARY:Reserve/Release: Jewish Wealth\, Philanthropy\, and the Disruptive Potential of Shemita
DESCRIPTION:The biblical practice of shemita (sabbatical year) includes mandates to cancel outstanding debts between borrowers and lenders\, and to relinquish personal ownership of land and its crop. How should we think about these mandates in the context of contemporary economics\, wealth distribution\, and philanthropy? Conversely\, how might we assess the state of our global economy\, and the world’s growing wealth gap in light of these mandates? \nJoin B’nai Jeshurun and Harvard Hillel for three unique events that bring leading thinkers into conversation with the ancient ideas of shemita and their potential application to our world today. Temple University professor Lila Corwin Berman and visual artist Danielle Durchslag will share their work about the complex histories and representations of American Jewish class ascension. Their conversation will also reflect on where the vision and values of shemita align and conflict with the realities of American Jewish wealth and philanthropy. \nRegister Now  \nLila Corwin Berman holds the Murray Friedman Chair of American Jewish History at Temple University\, where she directs the Feinstein Center for American Jewish History. Her most recent book\, The American Jewish Philanthropic Complex: The History of a Multibillion-Dollar Institution\, has been awarded prizes from the Organization of American Historians and the American Jewish Historical Society. She is author of several other books and articles\, and has written guest columns for the Washington Post\, the Forward\, the Chronicle of Philanthropy\, and the Jewish Week. Berman is currently working on a new book called “America’s Jewish Question” about the inclusions and exclusions of American liberalism. She is a graduate of Amherst College and received her Ph.D. from Yale University.  \nDanielle Durchslag is an artist and filmmaker based in Brooklyn\, NY. She has exhibited at art spaces and film festivals around the world\, at venues including The Jewish Museum\, the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival\, the Invisible Dog Art Center\, The UK Jewish Film Festival\, Winkleman Gallery\, The Bronx Museum\, Foley Gallery\, The Ackland Art Museum\, The Moscow Jewish Film Festival\, Davidson Gallery\, The Cannes Short Film Festival\, Yale University\, The New York Jewish Film Festival\, and Denny Dimin Gallery. Danielle’s work has been discussed in The Huffington Post\, Hyperallergic\, The Independent\, The Forward\, and The New York Observer\, among others. She is a selected fellow of the New Jewish Culture Fellowship\, and a grant recipient from the inaugural cycle of the NYFA Women’s Fund for Media\, Music\, and Theatre. Meyer Fellow 2006-2008) is a faculty fellow of the Pardes Institute\, a senior rabbinic fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute and a fellow of the Schusterman Foundation. Rabbi Brent has been the rabbi at Beacon Hebrew Alliance since 2010; prior to that\, he served as the Rabbi in Residence at American Jewish World Service. He has been recognized by the Jewish Forward as one of the most inspiring rabbis in America\, by Hudson Valley Magazine as a person to watch and by Newsweek as a rabbi to watch. Rabbi Brent holds rabbinic ordination and a master’s degree in philosophy from the Jewish Theological Seminary\, where he was the first recipient of the Neubauer Fellowship. Prior to entering the rabbinate\, he attended Wesleyan University and worked as a daily journalist in Durham\, NC. He lives in Beacon with his wife Alison\, a professor of environmental chemistry at Vassar College\, and their two children.

DESCRIPTION:Shemitat k’safim—debt remission—is one of the Torah’s shemita (sabbatical) year mandates\, allowing poor individuals who had borrowed money for their subsistence needs to have a fresh start. But how did that play out in practice\, so that the lender was also protected? In contemporary society\, does bankruptcy function as a type of shemitat k’safim? What is the impact of bankruptcy on lenders and on debtors and their families? \nFresh.Start is a non-profit\, led by a community of lawyers with bankruptcy expertise and a social vision\, offering working families who are motivated to get a fresh start in life a new and innovative debt recovery program. By disseminating information to the public\, monitoring legislation and debt regulations\, providing legal aid to civil society organizations\, and conducting public lectures for thousands of people in Israel\, Fresh.Start works to reduce and prevent debt and its grave ramifications. \nRegister Now\nAttorney Rachel Benziman serves as Fresh.Start’s policy and legislation consultant. Rachel Benziman is a graduate of the Hebrew University and of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Meyer Fellow 1999-2001) shares spiritual leadership of Beth Meyer Synagogue in Raleigh\, NC with his wife\, Rabbi Dr. Jenny Solomon. Rabbi Solomon currently serves on the City of Raleigh Human Relations Commission and the Interfaith I-CARE Team of the Raleigh Police Department. He is also the founding co-chair of the North Carolina Jewish Clergy Association.  He traveled as a Global Justice Fellow to Ghana and Guatemala with American Jewish World Service\, developed his spiritual practice with teachers from the Institute for Jewish Spirituality\, and holds the title of Senior Rabbinic Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. SUMMARY:An Economist Reads the Bible
DESCRIPTION:The biblical practice of shemita (sabbatical year) includes mandates to cancel outstanding debts between borrowers and lenders\, and to relinquish personal ownership of land and its crop. How should we think about these mandates in the context of contemporary economics\, wealth distribution\, and philanthropy? Conversely\, how might we assess the state of our global economy\, and the world’s growing wealth gap in light of these mandates? \nJoin B’nai Jeshurun and Harvard Hillel for three unique events that bring leading thinkers into conversation with the ancient ideas of shemita and their potential application to our world today. When economics meets theology\, interesting ideas emerge. Harvard professor Benjamin M. Friedman\, author of Religion and the Rise of Capitalism\, discusses the role of religion in the development of economic systems\, and talks Torah with Rabbi Shuli Passow (BJ) and Rabbi Dani Passow (Harvard Hillel). \nRegister Now\nBenjamin M. Friedman is the William Joseph Maier Professor of Political Economy\, and formerly Chairman of the Department of Economics\, at Harvard University. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1972. Mr. Friedman’s newest book\, to be published by Knopf in January 2021\, is Religion and the Rise of Capitalism – a fundamental reassessment of the foundations of current-day economics\, showing how religious thinking has shaped economic thinking ever since the beginnings of modern Western economics and how this influence continues to be relevant today especially in the United States. His two other general interest books have been The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth (Knopf) and Day of Reckoning: The Consequences of American Economic Policy Under Reagan and After (Random House). \nThis event is the first in a series of three. Be sure to join us for upcoming sessions with Rabbis Yael Ridberg\, Eric Solomon\, Brent Spodek\, and Michelle Dardashti. \nRegister Now\nRabbi Dara Frimmer (Marshall T. Meyer Fellow 2005-2007) serves as the Senior Rabbi of Temple Isaiah since July 2018. Her educational background is in Feminist Studies and Religious Studies. She received a BA from Stanford University in 1998 and a Masters in Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School in 2001. During her years in NYC\, Dara completed her second unit of hospital chaplaincy\, taught “Introduction to Judaism” at the 92nd Street Y\, and led trips to Latin America with American Jewish World Service. As a rabbinic intern\, she served two years at Congregation Kol Ami in White Plains\, NY. At B’nai Jeshurun she taught\, led services\, and helped to grow Tze’irim\, the 20’s-30’s group\, now known as Aviv. Since joining the Isaiah community in 2007 as Assistant Rabbi\, Dara is engaged in every aspect of congregational and life cycle events\, with a focus on social justice issues\, Israel\, and religious education. She is active with many local organizations committed to social justice including: American Jewish World Service\, Bend the Arc\, One LA-IAF and RAC-CA. In her free time\, Dara can be found shopping at the local farmer’s market or pretending to follow Wisconsin sports teams.
