Join Rabbi Roly Matalon for this three-part series exploring these and other relevant questions about prayer. \nJoin Us on Zoom

SUMMARY:Israeli Authors Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Can women truly choose to remain child-free\, acting against traditional Israeli social expectations? That is the central question in our December book pick\, Sarah Blau’s propulsive psychological thriller\, The Others\, named for the Torah’s designation for childless women. When one of the country’s preeminent feminist scholars is murdered\, her former friend Sheila could be the next victim… or the primary suspect.   \nRegister Now\nIn January\, we’ll be reading The Slaughterman’s Daughter by Yavniv Iczkovitz\, which bills itself as “an epic historical novel where ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ meets Tarantino.” More to come on this hefty novel (432 pages) that you may want to dig into early! \n

SUMMARY:Torah of Israel: Making Shemita Alive and Relevant in Israel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Sunday morning learning program following morning minyan. Sessions will be led by a rabbi or a prominent friend of BJ\, who will teach a monthly Torah class live. Each class will touch on a different topic that has been carefully chosen by the teacher to create an opportunity for enrichment and learning. This month\, Rabbi Yediya Sinclair will give a shiur (teaching)\, “From Avoiding to Embracing: Old-New Initiatives to Make Shemita Alive and Relevant in Israel.”  \nShemita is one of the biggest and most fascinating ideas in Judaism. It asks us to let the earth rest\, take a time out from our insatiable desires for more stuff\, enable people sunk in debt to turn a new page\, and all of us to pause\, take a deep breath and get a life. In this session\, we will explore how shemita became what it is today\, and some of the fascinating directions for renewing the social and environmental dimensions of shemita that are emerging in Israel and beyond. \nRegister Now \nRabbi Yedidya (Julian) Sinclair is an economist\, writer and rabbi. He began his career as an economist advising the UK government\, was Vice President and Senior Economist at Energiya Global\, an Israeli solar developer\, and works as an independent consultant on development projects in Africa. Yedidya was Senior Rabbinic Advisor for Hazon\, and Campus Rabbi at Cambridge University\, where he also taught Jewish Studies in the Divinity School. He holds degrees from Oxford and Harvard Universities and lives with his family in Jerusalem where he enjoys tour guiding in his spare time. His book\, The Sabbath of the Land\, will be published by Maggid Books in February.

SUMMARY:Melaveh Malkah for Shabbat Shirah
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Shirah (Shabbat of song) marks our people’s first palpable moment of liberation\, having survived the crossing of The Red Sea\, and then celebrated their freedom from bondage with joyous song and dance. This year—as Shabbat Shirah overlaps with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend—join vocalist Vanisha Gould\, poet Sabrina Hayeem-Ladani\, saxophonist John Ellis and BJ Music Director Dan Nadel on guitar as they present a program filled with the themes of freedom\, liberation\, rebirth\, and song. \nJoin on the BJ Facebook Page\nJoin on the YouTube Livestream\nVanisha Gould came to New York in 2015 from Simi Valley\, California. Inspired by artists like Billie Holiday\, Nina Simone\, Joni Mitchell\, Carmen McRae and Ella Fitzgerald – Vanisha has successfully curated her own sound as a composer and band leader. Performing originals and music from the Great American Songbook on several groundbreaking stages both in New York and overseas\, she aspires to continue sharing her voice with audiences in New York and beyond. \nSabrina Hayeem-Ladani is a Mizrahi-Jewish poet\, multi-genre performer\, and native New Yorker. Her work weaves poetry\, dance\, and song to explore themes of love\, family\, grief\, and what it means to be human. Sabrina has performed her work globally\, and her poems can be seen in various publications such as in the anthology So Much Things To Say: One Hundred Poems of Calabash (Akashic Books)\, and The Wide Shore\, a journal of global women’s poetry. She currently resides in Brooklyn.  \nDan Nadel is an Israeli-born\, New York-based guitarist and composer\, whose personal style combines flamenco\, jazz\, and Middle Eastern influences. He is a bandleader\, a solo performing artist\, and a collaborator with Tavche Gravche–a multinational neo-Balkan group. A busy musician on the New York scene\, Nadel has also worked with many world-renowned artists\, including jazz artists Chico Freeman and Dave Liebman\, Israeli-French pop star Yael Naim\, jazz vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli\, and opera singer Audrey Majzlin. In addition to his concert schedule\, Nadel is the creative and musical director for IAC’s Shishi Israeli\, hosted monthly at B’nai Jeshurun\, featuring piyutim and modern-day Israeli music. He also partners with Rabbi Roly Matalon of BJ to lead Bo-i Kallah\, a monthly Sefarad-Yerushalayim- inspired Kabbalat Shabbat. Nadel is curator and musical director for Songs of Sacred Time\, an ongoing series of Jewish liturgical music concerts at the Manhattan JCC. Nadel is a graduate of the BFA jazz program at The New School. Prior to moving to New York in 1997\, Nadel completed a three-year army duty in Israel\, where he served as the guitarist for the IDF’s Air Force Band. \nJohn Ellis is widely recognized as one of New York’s premiere tenor saxophone voices. With more than 150 album credits as a sideman\, John can be heard with artists as diverse as Kendrick Scott Oracle\, Edward Simon\, Darcy James Argue\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, and Helen Sung. John has released 13 albums as a leader\, three of those featuring his New Orleans-centered band Double-Wide. His latest release\, “Say It Quiet”\, is on the Sunnyside record label. \n

SUMMARY:Reimagining Criminal Justice\, Policing\, and Security in Jewish Communities
DESCRIPTION:As we spend this shemita (Sabbatical) year imagining new possibilities for our society’s entrenched challenges\, we are exploring such questions as: What does a truly safe\, and truly just\, society look like? What courageous conversations are needed to untangle and re-envision the interrelated topics of criminal justice reform\, policing\, and security? \nThe third event in the series will explore these issues and their impact in Jewish communities. How can synagogues and other Jewish institutions best protect their members from possible antisemitic attacks\, and create an environment where everyone feels safe and secure? Join Lindsey Newman (B’chol Lashon\, and Not Free to Desist)\, Rabbi Susan Talve\, and Deborah Lauter for a timely conversation moderated by Rabbi Jill Jacobs. \nRegister Now\nDeborah Lauter is the Executive Director of the NYC Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes. She brings three decades of experience working against hate acts and bigotry. Formerly a senior vice-president for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)\, Deborah’s past work helped build training and education programs to provide schools\, law enforcement officials\, and communities with the resources to target the roots of hatred. During her tenure as ADL’s National Civil Rights Director\, the organization led the national coalition that secured passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Federal Hate Crimes Act. Deborah is a graduate of the University of California\, Berkeley and received her J.D. from Cardozo School of Law. \nLindsey Newman is the Director of Community Engagement at Be’chol Lashon\, an organization that advocates for the racial\, ethnic and cultural diversity of the Jewish community. She has over a decade of experience working to advance racial justice in the Jewish community and in the fields of women’s rights advocacy and early childhood education. She participated in the 2016 Selah Leadership Cohort\, was a 2018 Fellow of the Ruskay Institute for Jewish Professional Leadership and received her B.S. degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University. Lindsey is a board member of NCJW San Francisco and a co-author of Not Free to Desist\, an open letter challenging the Jewish community to re-imagine its commitment to racial justice. \nRabbi Susan Talve is the founding rabbi of Central Reform Congregation\, the only Jewish Congregation located within the city limits of St. Louis. Rabbi Susan has led her congregation in promoting radical inclusivity by developing ongoing relationships with African-American and Muslim congregations\, and by fostering civil liberties for the LGBTQ community. Rabbi Susan was ordained by Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati in 1981\, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Hebrew Letters and a Doctor of Divinity. She was awarded honorary degrees from Washington University\, St Lawrence University and has received many awards for her efforts on behalf of the Jewish and non-Jewish community. \n  \nThis lecture is part of a series. You can find more information about the first session and the second session on our website.
