SUMMARY:Empty Chair at the Seder—A Pre-Pesah Bereavement Group
DESCRIPTION:The word seder means order and describes the 15 steps that we go through to reach the end of the Haggadah. However\, following the loss of a loved one\, the seder may feel like it has lost the sense of order that it once had\, as one is reorganizing one’s life to accommodate the new normal. \nAs we anticipate the arrival of Pesah\, a time steeped in tradition and togetherness\, feelings of grief and loss may be heightened as the memories of years past resurface. Join members of our community in drawing support and comfort from one another and our shared tradition. Facilitated by BJ Social Worker\, Jane Blumenstein\, LCSW\, this bereavement support group will meet virtually and is only open to current BJ members. \nRegister Now\nContact Jane with any questions.

SUMMARY:Reordering the Pesah Seder for Humanity
DESCRIPTION:When we observe so much of the brokenness in our world\, it’s hard to imagine that this is what humanity ordered. The first night of Pesah offers us Leil Seder—literally “the night of order”—to think about a restoration of society where everyone belongs and is valued. Join Rabbi Mike Moskowitz for an exploration of insights on this reordering that can inform our outlook on sustainable models of being. \nRegister Now\nRabbi Mike Moskowitz is the Scholar-in-Residence for Trans and Queer Jewish Studies at Congregation Beit Simchat Torah\, the world’s largest LGBT synagogue. He is a deeply traditional and radically progressive advocate for trans rights and a vocal ally for LGBTQ inclusivity. Rabbi Moskowitz received three Ultra-Orthodox ordinations while learning in the Mir in Jerusalem and in Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood\, NJ. He is a David Hartman Center Fellow and the author of Textual Activism. His writings can be found on his website.

SUMMARY:How to Resist Burnout Culture\, Seven Days a Week
DESCRIPTION:We live in a culture where working to the point of burnout is often a point of pride. But burnout can cause us tremendous physical\, psychological\, and spiritual damage. Fortunately\, we have many religious and secular resources to help us set limits on work and orient our lives toward what matters most to us. In this conversation with Rabbi Felicia Sol\, author Jonathan Malesic will diagnose our burnout culture and suggest how we might resist it within our communities. \nRegister Now\nJonathan Malesic is a writer and former theology professor whose essays have appeared in the New York Times\, Washington Post\, The Guardian\, The New Republic\, Chronicle of Higher Education\, The Point\, Hedgehog Review\, America\, Commonweal\, and elsewhere. He has appeared on Anderson Cooper Full Circle\, NPR’s All Things Considered\, The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos\, and many other podcasts and radio shows. His book\, The End of Burnout: Why Work Drains Us and How to Build Better Lives\, was recently published by University of California Press.

SUMMARY:Her Exodus: A Passover Exploration with Beit Toratah
DESCRIPTION:Starting with regendered moments from the haggadah\, Tamar Biala and Yael Kanarek will take us on a journey with the daughters of Tisraelah out of Metzerot. Come meet Moshah\, Par’ah\, and the hand of Tehovah. \nRegister Now\nTamar Biala has taught in various batei midrash\, rabbinical schools\, and adult education programs in the United States and Israel. At the Shalom Hartman Institute she trained teachers and IDF army officers. She is the co-editor of Dirshuni (Volume I) with Nehama Weingarten-Mintz and in 2018\, edited Volume II. She has recently completed an English edition of Dirshuni\, to be published by Brandeis University Press. Currently she is working with Yael Kanarek on the Toratah project: Regendering the Jewish Bible. See more on her blog. \nYael Kanarek has been a practicing visual artist and jewelry designer working across various media for 30 years. In her work\, she explores the role of language and narrative in forming a worldview. In 2016\, after a decade of Kabbalah studies in the tradition of Baal Hasulam and in response to the stunning void of canonical literature that codifies women’s experiences in the sacred\, she began rewriting the Torah by reversing the genders of all characters. In 2019\, Tamar Biala joined the initiative\, and in 2020\, they founded Beit Toratah. Yael Kanarek earned her MFA in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, NY.

The right to vote – one of our most fundamental civil liberties – is being challenged for many segments of our population\, with the greatest impact on communities of color. SUMMARY:Israeli Authors Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:In Meir Shalev’s The Loves of Judith: A Novel\, the title character takes up residence in a barn on the farm of Moshe Rabinovitch\, a widower in 1930s Palestine. Judith attracts the attention of a gentle canary dealer and a coarse cattle dealer as well. The characters’ interconnected stories are gradually revealed in the form of an extended reminiscence by Judith’s son\, Zayde. This 1994 novel\, which first appeared in English in 1999\, is\, as one critic writes\, “fertile ground for . . . tales [that] lie just beyond the edge of plausibility.” \nRegister Now
