SUMMARY:Israeli Authors Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Alice Shalvi’s spellbinding memoir\, Never a Native\, which won a National Jewish Book Award in 2019\, is both deeply personal and sweepingly political. Born in Germany in 1926\, Shalvi has been a resident of Israel for over seventy years and a pioneer in advancing the status of women in Israel (as co-founder of the Israel Women’s Network) and in girls’ education (as founder of the Pelech School\, a progressive religious high school in Jerusalem). Although she describes herself as “never a native” and always an outsider\, she is a force for good in Israel\, fighting for new and more equitable social realities.  \nRegister Now\nYou can watch BJ’s live interview with Shalvi on JBS’s YouTube page. \n

SUMMARY:Israeli Authors Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Can women truly choose to remain child-free\, acting against traditional Israeli social expectations? That is the central question in our December book pick\, Sarah Blau’s propulsive psychological thriller\, The Others\, named for the Torah’s designation for childless women. When one of the country’s preeminent feminist scholars is murdered\, her former friend Sheila could be the next victim… or the primary suspect.   \nRegister Now\nIn January\, we’ll be reading The Slaughterman’s Daughter by Yavniv Iczkovitz\, which bills itself as “an epic historical novel where ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ meets Tarantino.” More to come on this hefty novel (432 pages) that you may want to dig into early! \n

SUMMARY:Empty Chair at the Seder—A Pre-Pesah Bereavement Group
DESCRIPTION:The word seder means order and describes the 15 steps that we go through to reach the end of the Haggadah. However\, following the loss of a loved one\, the seder may feel like it has lost the sense of order that it once had\, as one is reorganizing one’s life to accommodate the new normal. \nAs we anticipate the arrival of Pesah\, a time steeped in tradition and togetherness\, feelings of grief and loss may be heightened as the memories of years past resurface. Join members of our community in drawing support and comfort from one another and our shared tradition. Facilitated by BJ Social Worker\, Jane Blumenstein\, LCSW\, this bereavement support group will meet virtually and is only open to current BJ members. \nRegister Now\nContact Jane with any questions.
