SUMMARY:Connections Cocktail hour with Professor Donna Robinson Divine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Connections Cocktail Hour\, where community member Professor Donna Robinson Divine will present on the topic\, “The Jewish State: Promises Fulfilled and Promises Broken.” \nWhen Israel declared its independence in May 1948\, it generated two narratives: one of a Jewish prophetic message of righteousness\, and another connecting Israel’s founding to colonialism and to the devastations of imperial conquest and exploitation. Professor Divine will bring to light the story of Israel’s establishment and development\, offering an accounting of Israel’s achievements and failures\, with a particular focus on its regional confrontations and on its still-to-be resolved conflicts with Palestinians. \nRegister to Join Us on Zoom\nDonna Robinson Divine is the Morningstar Family Professor of Jewish Studies and Professor of Government at Smith College. She is the author of the book Exiled in the Homeland\, a study of the experience of Jewish immigration to Palestine during the early years of the British Mandate.

SUMMARY:Torah Bound: Exploring Pirkei Avot with Rabbi Noa Kushner
DESCRIPTION:How do we understand the meaning of community and our responsibility to show up for one another? Join Rabbi Noa Kushner as we explore this theme from the second chapter of Pirkei Avot. \nRegister Now\nRabbi Noa Kushner founded The Kitchen in 2011 in response to friends who were looking for an informal\, transformative shabbat experience that they couldn’t find. The Kitchen quickly grew from a local shabbat experiment into an active doorway for San Francisco’s gen x and millenials looking for serious Jewish life. Through an emphasis on first-hand experience and “doing Jewish” over pedigree\, The Kitchen has become an international resource\, growing to serve thousands of modern families annually in seven years. After graduating with a degree in Religious Studies at Brown\, Kushner was ordained by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1998. She then served as a Hillel rabbi for both Sarah Lawrence College and Stanford University. \nThis is the second session of a six session series. Explore the other sessions on our website. \n

SUMMARY:Joint Memorial Day Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Yom Hazikaron\, or Israeli Memorial Day\, is sacred in Israel. Yet\, the ceremonies that are held to honor this day most often serve to reinforce cultural narratives of pain\, victimhood\, and hopelessness. The Joint Memorial\, co-hosted by Combatants for Peace and Parents Circle-Families Forum\, transforms this narrative by bringing Palestinians to the Memorial alongside Israelis\, changing despair into self-reflection\, personal responsibility\, and ultimately hope.  \nThe Joint Memorial Ceremony is the largest Israeli-Palestinian peace event in history. Last year 300\,000 people participated in the live broadcast event and over one million people streamed it afterwards. It has become a focal point for the entire peace community. Nearly every peace-building NGO in the region participates in some way\, and we are proud to be sponsors of the Ceremony this year! It has a profound impact on everyone involved in or witnessing the event. \nThe Joint Memorial Day Ceremony sets the foundation for widespread cultural change by shifting public opinion on a mass scale. Joining together to mourn each other’s pain challenges the status quo\, setting the foundation to build a new reality based on mutual respect\, dignity and equality. \nRegister Now
