SUMMARY:BJ Teens Civil Rights Journey (9th & 10th Grade)
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to share that we will be taking BJ Teens in 9th and 10th grade on the Civil Rights Journey to the South with Etgar 36\, May 12-15\, 2022. \nParticipants will learn about the struggles of African Americans to gain equality in the 1950s & 60s as well as discover how Jews were involved in the Civil Rights struggle. Participants will walk away understanding why Jews\, as people who have known oppression\, must care and act when others are oppressed. The journey can include Atlanta\, Montgomery\, Selma\, and Birmingham. Visits include the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum and Memorial to the victims of lynching\, Freedom Park\, the site where Leo Frank was lynched\, the Rosa Parks Museum\, the Martin Luther King Center/Auburn Ave. district\, Ebenezer Baptist Church\, walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge\, the 16th Street Baptist Church\, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute\, and learn about the current fight against voter suppression with Fair Fight 2020. \nRegister Now\nWhat are our Covid Protocols for this trip? \nThis plan has been formulated based on guidelines from the CDC\, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)\, and our peer programs\, building upon BJ’s Re-entry Task Force August report and campus operations plan. These guidelines are based on the conditions on the ground today. As such\, they are subject to change if conditions change. \n\nAll participants are required to submit proof they are fully vaccinated (two weeks after JJ shot or second Pfizer or Moderna shot) before participating in-person programming. No exceptions. \nAll participants\, whether vaccinated or not\, must provide proof of negative PCR test results within 3 days of departure for the trip.\nThe staff and drivers with our partner organization are all vaccinated. Beyond that\, we will follow all protocols put in place by the hotels and museums and will let you know what those are\, if any\, closer to your trip as things will change between now and then.\nStudents will be in shared hotel rooms for the trip as well as busses. When with their hotel pod\, they are allowed to be unmasked\, but as of now\, all group travel will be masked.

DESCRIPTION:BJ members are invited to participate in a discussion group focused on Israeli politics. Together\, we’ll explore how Israeli politics work\, what the checks and balances are\, who pulls the strings\, and what the costs are. \nIn May 1977\, Israelis said enough to a twenty-nine year period of Labor rule and gave a chance to the opposition leader Menachem Begin and the Likkud Party. What is known as the “Upheaval” brought new voices to Israel political sphere and changed the face of Israel. Guest speaker Dr. Avi Shilon will join us for a discussion concerning the political atmosphere that enabled this change\, and about Menachem Begin\, the most “Jewish” prime minister Israel has ever had. \nRegister to Join Us in Person\nRegister to Join Virtually\nDr. Avi Shilon is a historian. His PhD dissertation focuses on The Revisionist Movement Leaders’ Attitudes Toward Jewish religion 1925-2005. Shilon is the author of Menachem Begin’s biography – Menachem Begin: A Life\, which was published by Yale University press in 2012. His second book\, Ben Gurion: His Later Years in the Political Wilderness had been published in 2016 and his new book\, The Decline of the Left-wing in Israel: Yossi Beilin and the Politics of the Peace Process was published recently. Shilon is currently a visiting scholar at NYU. He also writes op-ed columns for Haaretz.

SUMMARY:7th & 8th Grade Trip to Washington DC
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to invite your child to join us on our annual trip to Washington DC. This trip provides an opportunity for our students to further their learning about the Holocaust while bonding with their peers and connecting to the BJ community outside of the classroom. We will visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, tour monuments\, celebrate Shabbat together\, and learn and reflect on our experiences. \nIn order to maximize our time and ensure a meaningful experience\, we will be leaving Friday morning\, March 4\, 2022 at 7:15AM. We will return from Washington DC on Sunday\, March 6 around 6:30PM. \n \nThis program is included for all students enrolled in Haverim ‘20-’21 (current 8th grade) and ‘21-’22 (current 7th grade)\, or can be purchased for $450. We hope you will consider joining us for this special trip! \nRegistration closed Tuesday\, November 23\, 2021.  \n  \nWhat are our Covid Protocols for this trip? \nThis plan has been formulated based on guidelines from the CDC\, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)\, and our peer programs\, building upon BJ’s Re-entry Task Force August report and campus operations plan. These guidelines are based on the conditions on the ground today. As such\, they are subject to change if conditions change. \n\nAll participants are required to submit proof they are fully vaccinated (two weeks after JJ shot or second Pfizer or Moderna shot) before the trip. No exceptions. \nAll participants must provide proof of negative PCR test results within 3 days of departure for the trip.\nStudents will be in shared hotel rooms for the trip\, as well as busses. When with their hotel pod\, they are allowed to be unmasked\, but as of now\, all group travel will be masked.
