SUMMARY:Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we apply the creative process to our learning and spiritual practice\, bringing Mussar together with anti-racism work\, led by Yehudah Webster and Rabbi David Jaffe. \n \n \nTo dismantle racism in our society at large and grapple with our own unconscious biases\, we need to make both a systemic change as well as do the inner work to change our habits of mind. Habits of mind are changed most effectively through practice. Mussar is the Jewish spiritual discipline designed to integrate the head and the heart through daily practice. Together\, we’ll delve into the synergies between anti-racism practice and Mussar\, exploring how this ancient Jewish wisdom has an important role to play in the urgent contemporary challenge of dismantling racism. \nAs we come together\, we’ll explore how Mussar practices can actually be key tools for subverting the biases and hierarchies created by racism. The session will also include time and space for personal reflection and guided practice. \nRegister now\n\nIn the weeks and months following this program\, we are excited to be partnering with “Inside Out Wisdom and Action” in piloting a “Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out” cohort\, led by Yehuda Webster and Rabbi David Jaffe. DESCRIPTION:Join BJ member and collage artist\, Michal Nachmany\, for a Zoom workshop in collage art. Each person or family will be invited to create a collage centered on the promise that in dark times\, even small actions can add light to the future generations of our family community.  \nImagine the lives and hard beginnings of our parents and grandparents\, who lit just a ‘small candle’ to allow us to live a life of joy in New York.  As such\, you may use old family images (copies)\, past and presence\, in your collage\, mapping a journey from yesteryear to 2021. You may use old images (newspaper and magazine clips\, photos\, old recipes\, envelopes and letters\, postcards\, etc.) as elements in your collage.  \nNachmany’s artistic motto is\, “Every Person and Every Object Has a Journey.” Think about the journeys of these images and objects and create a story using them. \nRegister Now\nMichal Nachmany is self-taught mixed-media and collage artist who has exhibited in solo shows in the U.S.\, Taiwan\, and Poland. She is also an educator who teaches modern and liturgical Hebrew in rabbinical schools\, synagogues\, and elsewhere. Nachmany grew up in Jerusalem\, where the mixture of cultures\, people\, architecture\, objects\, colors\, sounds\, and smells from the streets and the markets of Jerusalem shaped her awareness of the past as a foundation of the present. In recent years she had opportunities to exhibit in multiple locations in New York City and nearby. She also had two international exhibitions\, one in Taiwan and another in Poland. Joining the staff in 2012 during a transition to new leadership has given her the ability to be part of this organization as it continues to reexamine\, broaden and investigate the locus of art and Jewish culture.\nWeiss previously held positions in Museum Education as the Spiegel Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia\, and as Visitor Services Coordinator of the Rose Museum of Contemporary Art at Brandeis University. She has taught courses in painting and drawing as an Adjunct Lecturer at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University and Caldwell College\, Caldwell\, NJ. She holds a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Brandeis University\, and earned her MFA in Painting at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. She is an alum of Asylum Arts\, a global network of Jewish Artists\, Schusterman Foundation ROI Summit\, and Getty Leadership Institute\, NextGen 2019. In addition to her work in Museums\, Weiss maintains an active studio practice and has been a resident of the Chashama Space to Create program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park since 2011. DESCRIPTION:Where did the oil come from to light the menorah during the time of the Temple?  As Hanukah approaches\, Rabbi Fried\, the Shul Coordinator of Chabad of the the West Side\, will demonstrate the use of a rustic oil press to produce oil from fresh olives\, much like the Jews did in the time of the Temple.
