DESCRIPTION:Calling all actors — experience and aspiring! It’s time for the BJ Theater Company’s annual Purim Shpiel. Each year\, we produce a splashy\, spectacular Shpiel with a fun-filled theme. This show is open to age 5-eighth graders\, and no previous theater experience is necessary. Every child has speaking lines and singing solos in the show\, which is a nurturing\, enriching experience for performers at all levels. \nRehearsals on January 16 will be virtual from 11:30-1:00pm (K-1st grade will log off at 12:30) \nRehearsal on Sunday\, January 23 will be virtual. K-1st grade will rehearse from 11:30-12:30 and 2nd-8th grade will rehearse from 1:30-3:00pm\nRehearsals will be held in-person on Sundays\, starting January 30: \n\nK & First Grade: 11:30-12:30\nSecond-Eighth Grade: 1:30-4:00\n\nIf you hope to participate but have scheduling concerns\, email Emma — we’re flexible! Join fellow 20s and 30s for a series exploring the intersection of Social Justice and Art. You are still welcome!  \nRegister Now\n  \nSession 1: Virtual Museum Visit and Discussion  \nJoin us as we explore the virtual exhibit Activism\, New York featured at the Museum for the City of New York and meet Jenna from the Jewish Museum\, followed by small group discussions. \nOur Presenter: \nJenna Weiss currently serves as Manager of Public Programs at the Jewish Museum\, where she is responsible for the conception and implementation of diverse and rigorous temporary exhibition and collection related programming for adult audiences. Joining the staff in 2012 during a transition to new leadership has given her the ability to be part of this organization as it continues to reexamine\, broaden and investigate the locus of art and Jewish culture.\nWeiss previously held positions in Museum Education as the Spiegel Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia\, and as Visitor Services Coordinator of the Rose Museum of Contemporary Art at Brandeis University. She has taught courses in painting and drawing as an Adjunct Lecturer at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University and Caldwell College\, Caldwell\, NJ. She holds a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Brandeis University\, and earned her MFA in Painting at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. She is an alum of Asylum Arts\, a global network of Jewish Artists\, Schusterman Foundation ROI Summit\, and Getty Leadership Institute\, NextGen 2019. In addition to her work in Museums\, Weiss maintains an active studio practice and has been a resident of the Chashama Space to Create program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park since 2011. We are joining the Synagogue Coalition on the Refugee & Immigration Crisis and the Westchester Jewish Coalition for Immigration to help collect 500 children’s winter coats\, as well as black or brown hair dye. \nCoats can be dropped off any time outside 89th Street between 8:00AM-6:00PM on December 13\, 15\, 20\, and 22.

SUMMARY:Torah of Israel: Shemita in Eretz Yisrael
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Sunday morning learning program following morning minyan. Sessions will be led by a rabbi or a prominent friend of BJ\, who will teach a monthly Torah class live. Each class will touch on a different topic that has been carefully chosen by the teacher to create an opportunity for enrichment and learning. \nThis month\, Prof. Yehudah Mirsky will give a shiur (teaching) on “Rav Kook and Shemitah in Eretz Yisrael”. \nRegister Now  \nRav Kook (1865-1935) is to this day the leading thinker and figure of Religious Zionism. One of his many efforts was to find ways to adapt shemittah to the present\, while maintaining its spirit. His work on this\, Shabbat Ha-Aretz (available in a wonderful English edition put out by Hazon)\, is a profound meditation on the relationships between Jewishness\, peoplehood\, land and historical change. We will read some passages from it together. \nYehudah Mirsky is Professor of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis and on the faculty of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies. He studied at Yeshivat Har Etzion and Yeshiva College and received rabbinic ordination in Jerusalem. He is a graduate of Yale Law School\, and completed his PhD in Religion at Harvard. He worked in Washington as an aide to then-Senators Bob Kerrey and Al Gore\, and at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy\, and served in the Clinton Administration as special advisor in the US State Department’s human rights bureau. He lives in Jerusalem where he has been a grass-roots activist. He has written widely on politics\, theology and culture for a number of publications including The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Foreign Policy\, The New Republic and The Economist\, The Daily Beast\, and The Guardian After the attacks of September 11 he served as a volunteer chaplain for the Red Cross. He is the author of the widely-acclaimed volume\, Rav Kook: Mystic in a Time of Revolution (Yale University Press)\, recently published in Hebrew as Rav Kook: Mabat Hadash (Devir)\, and\, most recently\, Toward the Mystical Experience of Modernity (Academic Studies Press).
