DESCRIPTION:Shemitat k’safim—debt remission—is one of the Torah’s shemita (sabbatical) year mandates\, allowing poor individuals who had borrowed money for their subsistence needs to have a fresh start. But how did that play out in practice\, so that the lender was also protected? In contemporary society\, does bankruptcy function as a type of shemitat k’safim? What is the impact of bankruptcy on lenders and on debtors and their families? \nFresh.Start is a non-profit\, led by a community of lawyers with bankruptcy expertise and a social vision\, offering working families who are motivated to get a fresh start in life a new and innovative debt recovery program. By disseminating information to the public\, monitoring legislation and debt regulations\, providing legal aid to civil society organizations\, and conducting public lectures for thousands of people in Israel\, Fresh.Start works to reduce and prevent debt and its grave ramifications. \nRegister Now\nAttorney Rachel Benziman serves as Fresh.Start’s policy and legislation consultant. Rachel Benziman is a graduate of the Hebrew University and of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. You are still welcome!  \nRegister Now\n  \nSession 1: Virtual Museum Visit and Discussion  \nJoin us as we explore the virtual exhibit Activism\, New York featured at the Museum for the City of New York and meet Jenna from the Jewish Museum\, followed by small group discussions. \nOur Presenter: \nJenna Weiss currently serves as Manager of Public Programs at the Jewish Museum\, where she is responsible for the conception and implementation of diverse and rigorous temporary exhibition and collection related programming for adult audiences. Joining the staff in 2012 during a transition to new leadership has given her the ability to be part of this organization as it continues to reexamine\, broaden and investigate the locus of art and Jewish culture.\nWeiss previously held positions in Museum Education as the Spiegel Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia\, and as Visitor Services Coordinator of the Rose Museum of Contemporary Art at Brandeis University. She has taught courses in painting and drawing as an Adjunct Lecturer at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University and Caldwell College\, Caldwell\, NJ. She holds a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Brandeis University\, and earned her MFA in Painting at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. She is an alum of Asylum Arts\, a global network of Jewish Artists\, Schusterman Foundation ROI Summit\, and Getty Leadership Institute\, NextGen 2019. In addition to her work in Museums\, Weiss maintains an active studio practice and has been a resident of the Chashama Space to Create program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park since 2011. DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to share that we will be taking BJ Teens in 11th and 12th grade on a special Shemita trip to Urban Adamah in Berkeley\, CA. \nRegister Now\nWhat are our Covid Protocols for this trip? \nThis plan has been formulated based on guidelines from the CDC\, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)\, and our peer programs\, building upon BJ’s Re-entry Task Force August report and campus operations plan. These guidelines are based on the conditions on the ground today. As such\, they are subject to change if conditions change. \n\nAll participants are required to submit proof they are fully vaccinated (two weeks after JJ shot or second Pfizer or Moderna shot) before participating in-person programming. No exceptions. \nAll participants\, whether vaccinated or not\, must provide proof of negative PCR test results within 3 days of departure for the trip.\nThe staff and drivers with our partner organization are all vaccinated. Beyond that\, we will follow all protocols put in place by the hotels and museums and will let you know what those are\, if any\, closer to your trip as things will change between now and then.\nStudents will be in shared hotel rooms for the trip\, as well as busses. When with their hotel pod\, they are allowed to be unmasked\, but as of now\, all group travel will be masked.

DESCRIPTION:The biblical practice of shemita (sabbatical year) includes mandates to cancel outstanding debts between borrowers and lenders\, and to relinquish personal ownership of land and its crop. How should we think about these mandates in the context of contemporary economics\, wealth distribution\, and philanthropy? Conversely\, how might we assess the state of our global economy\, and the world’s growing wealth gap in light of these mandates? \nJoin B’nai Jeshurun and Harvard Hillel for three unique events that bring leading thinkers into conversation with the ancient ideas of shemita and their potential application to our world today. When economics meets theology\, interesting ideas emerge. Harvard professor Benjamin M. Friedman\, author of Religion and the Rise of Capitalism\, discusses the role of religion in the development of economic systems\, and talks Torah with Rabbi Shuli Passow (BJ) and Rabbi Dani Passow (Harvard Hillel). \nRegister Now\nBenjamin M. Friedman is the William Joseph Maier Professor of Political Economy\, and formerly Chairman of the Department of Economics\, at Harvard University. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1972. Mr. Friedman’s newest book\, to be published by Knopf in January 2021\, is Religion and the Rise of Capitalism – a fundamental reassessment of the foundations of current-day economics\, showing how religious thinking has shaped economic thinking ever since the beginnings of modern Western economics and how this influence continues to be relevant today especially in the United States. His two other general interest books have been The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth (Knopf) and Day of Reckoning: The Consequences of American Economic Policy Under Reagan and After (Random House). \nThis event is the first in a series of three.
