DESCRIPTION:The biblical practice of shemita (sabbatical year) includes mandates to cancel outstanding debts between borrowers and lenders\, and to relinquish personal ownership of land and its crop. How should we think about these mandates in the context of contemporary economics\, wealth distribution\, and philanthropy? Conversely\, how might we assess the state of our global economy\, and the world’s growing wealth gap in light of these mandates?  \nJoin B’nai Jeshurun and Harvard Hillel for three unique events that bring leading thinkers into conversation with the ancient ideas of shemita and their potential application to our world today. Income and wealth inequality have grown rapidly in the United States in recent decades\, with the potential to tear at the strength of our economy\, social fabric and even our democracy. What tools from traditional models of capitalism might address such inequities\, and what can new approaches to economic development and civic engagement offer? Join Dayna Cunningham\, dean of the Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University and N. DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Michelle Dardashti for the final installment of Torah for our Time\, exploring how we encounter fear in a Jewish context. \nThis six-part series—taught by alumni of the Marshall T. Meyer Rabbinic Fellowship—brings the wisdom of our tradition to some of the deepest themes of our time. \nRegister Now\nRabbi Michelle Dardashti (Marshall T. Meyer Fellow 2009-2011) serves as Associate University Chaplain for the Jewish Community at Brown University and Rabbi at Brown RISD Hillel. The daughter of an American folk-singer/teacher and an Iranian-born cantor\, Rabbi Dardashti was raised on a brand of Judaism that is multicultural\, meta-denominational\, musical and global. She became a rabbi to share the gifts her parents’ eclectic Judaism afforded her: passion\, hope\, wonder\, gratitude\, empathy\, responsibility and joy. \nDardashti was ordained and received an MA in Jewish Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary. She came to Brown in 2013 after serving as the Marshall T. Meyer Fellow at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Manhattan and Director of Community Engagement at Temple Beth El in Stamford\, CT. At Brown\, Dardashti nourishes a Judaism that is broad and deep and engaged with the world. She represents Judaism at university events and multifaith programs and nurtures Jewish life at Hillel through teaching\, leading (and supporting students in leading) services\, and creating alternative platforms for spiritual engagement\, including monthly Women’s Rosh Hodesh (New Moon) gatherings\, weekly “JIM Sits” (JIM-Jewishly Inspired Meditation—a workout for the soul) and Kivun\, a musical and soulful prayer experience. She has also birthed a number of initiatives that critically explore allyship\, antisemitism\, activism\, and the American Jewish relationship to Israel. Among these are the Hillel Initiative for Racial Awareness and Justice and the Narrow Bridge Project and Fellowship; the latter were recently covered by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. \nRabbi Dardashti has spent time living and working in the Jewish community of Montevideo\, Uruguay as well as four years in Jerusalem\, where she was a student at Hebrew University\, a Dorot Fellow\, and a volunteer and staff member at a number of NGOs working in the realms of democracy\, dialogue and cross-cultural exchange. Her writings have appeared in The Forward\, Jewschool and Siddur Lev Shalem (2016)\, and in three recent books: One Nation\, Indivisible: Seeking Liberty and Justice from the Pulpit to the Streets (2019)\, Chaver Up: Allyship Through A Modern Jewish Lens (2021) and Jewish Theological Grace: Drashot In Honor of Chancellor Arnold M. Eisen (2022\, forthcoming). She is also a 2021 Pedagogies of Wellbeing Research Fellow through M²: The Institute for Experiential Jewish Education. \nRabbi Dardashti is married to Nathan Sher. Together they have three children: Eden (born while Michelle was at BJ ;)\, Miya (born in CT)\, and Lavi (born in RI).

Open to lawyers\, law students\, and anyone interested in volunteering (no legal experience needed)\, the training will cover the contents of an application\, how to evaluate whether individuals are eligible for Humanitarian Parole\, the filing of petitions and other necessary documents. After the training\, you will be able to volunteer your time with Good Counsel to support Afghan families who need legal support. \nRegister Now\nBackground \n Good Counsel Services is a non-profit organization based in New York City providing legal services to a wide variety of clients. Although the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has ended\, hundreds of individuals in Afghanistan still are at risk of persecution under the Taliban government and wish to flee. Since August 2021\, Good Counsel Services has been assisting vulnerable Afghan nationals and their families by filing Humanitarian Parole applications on their behalf\, which\, if approved\, would allow them to come to the United States temporarily. \nWe Need Your Help \nGood Counsel Services continues to receive requests from Afghan families who are in danger and want to file for Humanitarian Parole. However\, the organization doesn’t have the capacity to process these cases on their own. Their Legal Team is currently soliciting attorneys and other legal professionals\, law students\, and volunteers (no legal experience required) to help process Humanitarian Parole requests\, gather documentation\, and file Humanitarian Parole applications on behalf of Afghan families.

This trip provides an opportunity for our students to further their learning about the Holocaust while bonding with their peers and connecting to the BJ community outside of the classroom. We will visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, tour monuments\, celebrate Shabbat together\, and learn and reflect on our experiences. \nIn order to maximize our time and ensure a meaningful experience\, we will be leaving Friday morning\, March 4\, 2022 at 7:15AM. We will return from Washington DC on Sunday\, March 6 around 6:30PM. \n \nThis program is included for all students enrolled in Haverim ‘20-’21 (current 8th grade) and ‘21-’22 (current 7th grade)\, or can be purchased for $450. We hope you will consider joining us for this special trip! \nRegistration closed Tuesday\, November 23\, 2021.  \n  \nWhat are our Covid Protocols for this trip? \nThis plan has been formulated based on guidelines from the CDC\, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)\, and our peer programs\, building upon BJ’s Re-entry Task Force August report and campus operations plan. These guidelines are based on the conditions on the ground today. As such\, they are subject to change if conditions change. \n\nAll participants are required to submit proof they are fully vaccinated (two weeks after JJ shot or second Pfizer or Moderna shot) before the trip. SUMMARY:Reserve/Release: Jewish Wealth\, Philanthropy\, and the Disruptive Potential of Shemita
DESCRIPTION:The biblical practice of shemita (sabbatical year) includes mandates to cancel outstanding debts between borrowers and lenders\, and to relinquish personal ownership of land and its crop. How should we think about these mandates in the context of contemporary economics\, wealth distribution\, and philanthropy? Conversely\, how might we assess the state of our global economy\, and the world’s growing wealth gap in light of these mandates? \nJoin B’nai Jeshurun and Harvard Hillel for three unique events that bring leading thinkers into conversation with the ancient ideas of shemita and their potential application to our world today. Temple University professor Lila Corwin Berman and visual artist Danielle Durchslag will share their work about the complex histories and representations of American Jewish class ascension. Their conversation will also reflect on where the vision and values of shemita align and conflict with the realities of American Jewish wealth and philanthropy. \nRegister Now  \nLila Corwin Berman holds the Murray Friedman Chair of American Jewish History at Temple University\, where she directs the Feinstein Center for American Jewish History. Her most recent book\, The American Jewish Philanthropic Complex: The History of a Multibillion-Dollar Institution\, has been awarded prizes from the Organization of American Historians and the American Jewish Historical Society. She is author of several other books and articles\, and has written guest columns for the Washington Post\, the Forward\, the Chronicle of Philanthropy\, and the Jewish Week. Berman is currently working on a new book called “America’s Jewish Question” about the inclusions and exclusions of American liberalism. She is a graduate of Amherst College and received her Ph.D. from Yale University.  \nDanielle Durchslag is an artist and filmmaker based in Brooklyn\, NY. She has exhibited at art spaces and film festivals around the world\, at venues including The Jewish Museum\, the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival\, the Invisible Dog Art Center\, The UK Jewish Film Festival\, Winkleman Gallery\, The Bronx Museum\, Foley Gallery\, The Ackland Art Museum\, The Moscow Jewish Film Festival\, Davidson Gallery\, The Cannes Short Film Festival\, Yale University\, The New York Jewish Film Festival\, and Denny Dimin Gallery. Danielle’s work has been discussed in The Huffington Post\, Hyperallergic\, The Independent\, The Forward\, and The New York Observer\, among others. She is a selected fellow of the New Jewish Culture Fellowship\, and a grant recipient from the inaugural cycle of the NYFA Women’s Fund for Media\, Music\, and Theatre. DESCRIPTION:Shemitat k’safim—debt remission—is one of the Torah’s shemita (sabbatical) year mandates\, allowing poor individuals who had borrowed money for their subsistence needs to have a fresh start. But how did that play out in practice\, so that the lender was also protected? In contemporary society\, does bankruptcy function as a type of shemitat k’safim? What is the impact of bankruptcy on lenders and on debtors and their families? \nFresh.Start is a non-profit\, led by a community of lawyers with bankruptcy expertise and a social vision\, offering working families who are motivated to get a fresh start in life a new and innovative debt recovery program. By disseminating information to the public\, monitoring legislation and debt regulations\, providing legal aid to civil society organizations\, and conducting public lectures for thousands of people in Israel\, Fresh.Start works to reduce and prevent debt and its grave ramifications. \nRegister Now\nAttorney Rachel Benziman serves as Fresh.Start’s policy and legislation consultant. Rachel Benziman is a graduate of the Hebrew University and of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Rachel is a professional human and civil rights lawyer who served as the executive director of ACRI – The Association for Civil Rights in Israel and as its legal director.  She previously served as the legal director of IWN—the Israeli Women’s Network.

Calling all K-8th grade actors\, dancers\, singers\, and aspiring performers to join us for what promises to be our biggest\, best spiel yet! This year’s show is Hai School Musi-Spiel\, based on Disney’s beloved High School Musical. Register before winter break and submit your video audition to Emma by email. No prior performance experience necessary; fun guaranteed!  \nRegister Now\nRehearsals will be held on Zoom in January and February on Sundays with some additional rehearsals after school on Tuesdays and occasional other weekdays. Families will receive a more detailed schedule from Emma upon registration and should be in touch before registering if they have any scheduling questions or conflicts to discuss!
