DESCRIPTION:Join us before Shabbat services for a Get Out the Vote pre-oneg!  \nAt a time when renewed voter attacks and voter suppression efforts are sharply on the rise\, it is our responsibility to make sure that all voters have the tools and the power to make their voices heard at the ballot. In partnership with Reclaim our Vote and a coalition of Upper West Side faith organizations\, we are mobilizing volunteers to send 5\,000 postcards to voters in states with a history of voter suppression to empower them to exercise their right to vote. \nVolunteers will receive a packet of 30 postcards\, along with everything you will need to make postcarding easy—scripts\, pre-addressed labels\, and stamps. We ask for volunteers to make a payment of $13 to cover the cost of supplies. \nReserve and pay for your packet in advance\nLight beverages and snacks will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we are eager to join together in person (and virtually) to explore themes of climate change\, the refugee crisis and immigration\, Black culture and history\, and the healing power of music. Sponsored by Panim: Social Action and Social Justice at BJ\, this film series will highlight various social justice issues with relevant speakers and opportunities for conversations with community members. We hope you will join us and be inspired by the films and accompanying conversations. \nThe True Cost of Fashion \nA groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider: Who really pays the price for our clothing? The True Cost is about the clothes we wear\, the people who make them\, and the human and environmental impact the industry is having on our world. \n\nFor those joining in person\, doors will open at 6:45 PM and the film screening will begin at 7:00 PM. \nFor those watching from home\, the film is available on Amazon Prime or YouTube for a fee. They will discuss proposed legislation around fashion sustainability\, NYC’s zero waste goals\, and how we can all be more responsible consumers in our daily lives.  \nIbada Wadud teaches in the School of Design Strategies and School of Fashion at Parsons School of Design\, with a focus on “design justice.” She is the Founder & Head of Impact at LULAH\, a lifestyle brand recognized by the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice for groundbreaking work with formerly incarcerated citizens. As a board member of the NY Fashion Workforce Development Coalition\, Ibada advises the NY State Senate and US Senate on fashion policy\, including Senator Gillibrand’s Fabric Act and Senator Biaggi’s Fashion Sustainability & Social Accountability Act. \nCurrently\, Ibada works with Adidas on strategy & innovation with a focus on communities + culture and consumer foresight. She has been featured at dozens of events including Columbia University’s Women in Sustainability Summit\, WWD x Beauty Inc.’s Sustainability Forum\, FIT’s City Source and CFDA.com. Previously\, she managed social responsibility at Kate Spade in New York and Rwanda\, and consulted for the United Nations. She studied at Rhode Island School of Design’s Institute for Design + Public Policy\, and holds a Master’s in Human Rights from Universidad Pablo de Olavide. She is fluent in Spanish. \nRenzi Wise (she/her) is a Community Coordinator at donateNYC\, a program of the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) that promotes donations and reuse to advance NYC’s zero waste goals. In this role\, Renzi executes the program’s external communications strategy and conducts outreach to recruit new users for donateNYC’s online Food Portal and Exchange tools. Prior to joining donateNYC in 2021\, she worked with the Sanitation Foundation\, supporting strategic public-private partnerships to engage New Yorkers in waste reduction and the mission of DSNY. SUMMARY:Community Conversation on Policing and Security
DESCRIPTION:We understand that conversations surrounding security and the police can be challenging\, emotional\, and even tumultuous at times. The relationship that people of color\, particularly Black and Brown folks\, members of the LGBTQ+ community\, and other marginalized identities have with the police is extremely complicated due to centuries of violent police brutality.  \nWith this reality in mind\, we are looking to provide a space to gather and connect with folks who hold identities that have a history of being targeted by police violence. As we strive to be a holy community that feels safe and secure for all who enter our home\, we know that dialogue and understanding each other’s perspectives is critical. Conversations like these have been a part of our effort this past year to engage these questions with our community\, and we hope that many of you will join us for this conversation in our larger process of understanding true community safety. Join fellow 20s and 30s for a series exploring the intersection of Social Justice and Art. You are still welcome!  \nRegister Now\n  \nSession 1: Virtual Museum Visit and Discussion  \nJoin us as we explore the virtual exhibit Activism\, New York featured at the Museum for the City of New York and meet Jenna from the Jewish Museum\, followed by small group discussions. \nOur Presenter: \nJenna Weiss currently serves as Manager of Public Programs at the Jewish Museum\, where she is responsible for the conception and implementation of diverse and rigorous temporary exhibition and collection related programming for adult audiences. Joining the staff in 2012 during a transition to new leadership has given her the ability to be part of this organization as it continues to reexamine\, broaden and investigate the locus of art and Jewish culture.\nWeiss previously held positions in Museum Education as the Spiegel Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia\, and as Visitor Services Coordinator of the Rose Museum of Contemporary Art at Brandeis University. She has taught courses in painting and drawing as an Adjunct Lecturer at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University and Caldwell College\, Caldwell\, NJ. She holds a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Brandeis University\, and earned her MFA in Painting at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. She is an alum of Asylum Arts\, a global network of Jewish Artists\, Schusterman Foundation ROI Summit\, and Getty Leadership Institute\, NextGen 2019. In addition to her work in Museums\, Weiss maintains an active studio practice and has been a resident of the Chashama Space to Create program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park since 2011. SUMMARY:Kiddush Gathering With the Tzedek Centers
DESCRIPTION:After Shabbat services\, enjoy a community Kiddush on the Community House Rooftop\, followed by a conversation with Amit Ben-Ami and Lev Littman of the Tzedek Centers and Ahlan Kasim Ali from Ajyal. Learn about these inspiring organizations\, which work with Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel to promote civic engagement\, equality\, and peace. The leaders will speak about their joint initiative in the mixed cities in Israel and how they are working together towards coexistence. \nTzedek Centers is a national grassroots movement established in 2016 to promote democracy\, equality and justice in the Israeli society. We do professional field work\, community organizing and activist training\, promoting local and national policy change concerning the dire issues of our society. Our seven centers operate in seven different cities and are home to thousands of activists—we have reached over 130\,000 citizens who participated in 230 training programs\, hundreds of community events\, and many campaigns. We are Israeli citizens who believe democracy is much more than casting a ballot\, and that control over our fate starts in resilient communities. \nAjyal is an Arab movement established in 2006\, as a growing new young leadership in the Arab society of Israel\, that calls for equality\, solidarity and peace. An educational movement at its core\, Ajyal today is a unique movement in its various ways to organize the community; maximize participation in the public sphere; and promote occupational and educational equality for young Palestinian citizens of Israel. The Ajyal youth movement has more than 35 branches with over 5\,000 participants in various Arab cities and villages\, such as Haifa\, Lod\, Sakhnin\, Ramla\, Rahat\, Tamra\, and many more. Over 400 graduates of Ajyal leadership programs take significant roles in their community\, tying their personal paths with the common good of society.
