Join fellow 20s and 30s for a series exploring the intersection of Social Justice and Art. You are still welcome!  \nRegister Now\n  \nSession 1: Virtual Museum Visit and Discussion  \nJoin us as we explore the virtual exhibit Activism\, New York featured at the Museum for the City of New York and meet Jenna from the Jewish Museum\, followed by small group discussions. \nOur Presenter: \nJenna Weiss currently serves as Manager of Public Programs at the Jewish Museum\, where she is responsible for the conception and implementation of diverse and rigorous temporary exhibition and collection related programming for adult audiences. Joining the staff in 2012 during a transition to new leadership has given her the ability to be part of this organization as it continues to reexamine\, broaden and investigate the locus of art and Jewish culture.\nWeiss previously held positions in Museum Education as the Spiegel Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia\, and as Visitor Services Coordinator of the Rose Museum of Contemporary Art at Brandeis University. She has taught courses in painting and drawing as an Adjunct Lecturer at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University and Caldwell College\, Caldwell\, NJ. She holds a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Brandeis University\, and earned her MFA in Painting at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. She is an alum of Asylum Arts\, a global network of Jewish Artists\, Schusterman Foundation ROI Summit\, and Getty Leadership Institute\, NextGen 2019. In addition to her work in Museums\, Weiss maintains an active studio practice and has been a resident of the Chashama Space to Create program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park since 2011. Meyer Fellow 2006-2008) is a faculty fellow of the Pardes Institute\, a senior rabbinic fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute and a fellow of the Schusterman Foundation. Rabbi Brent has been the rabbi at Beacon Hebrew Alliance since 2010; prior to that\, he served as the Rabbi in Residence at American Jewish World Service. He has been recognized by the Jewish Forward as one of the most inspiring rabbis in America\, by Hudson Valley Magazine as a person to watch and by Newsweek as a rabbi to watch. Rabbi Brent holds rabbinic ordination and a master’s degree in philosophy from the Jewish Theological Seminary\, where he was the first recipient of the Neubauer Fellowship. Prior to entering the rabbinate\, he attended Wesleyan University and worked as a daily journalist in Durham\, NC. He lives in Beacon with his wife Alison\, a professor of environmental chemistry at Vassar College\, and their two children.

SUMMARY:Reserve/Release: Jewish Wealth\, Philanthropy\, and the Disruptive Potential of Shemita
DESCRIPTION:The biblical practice of shemita (sabbatical year) includes mandates to cancel outstanding debts between borrowers and lenders\, and to relinquish personal ownership of land and its crop. How should we think about these mandates in the context of contemporary economics\, wealth distribution\, and philanthropy? Conversely\, how might we assess the state of our global economy\, and the world’s growing wealth gap in light of these mandates? \nJoin B’nai Jeshurun and Harvard Hillel for three unique events that bring leading thinkers into conversation with the ancient ideas of shemita and their potential application to our world today. Temple University professor Lila Corwin Berman and visual artist Danielle Durchslag will share their work about the complex histories and representations of American Jewish class ascension. Their conversation will also reflect on where the vision and values of shemita align and conflict with the realities of American Jewish wealth and philanthropy. \nRegister Now  \nLila Corwin Berman holds the Murray Friedman Chair of American Jewish History at Temple University\, where she directs the Feinstein Center for American Jewish History. Her most recent book\, The American Jewish Philanthropic Complex: The History of a Multibillion-Dollar Institution\, has been awarded prizes from the Organization of American Historians and the American Jewish Historical Society. She is author of several other books and articles\, and has written guest columns for the Washington Post\, the Forward\, the Chronicle of Philanthropy\, and the Jewish Week. Berman is currently working on a new book called “America’s Jewish Question” about the inclusions and exclusions of American liberalism. She is a graduate of Amherst College and received her Ph.D. from Yale University.  \nDanielle Durchslag is an artist and filmmaker based in Brooklyn\, NY. She has exhibited at art spaces and film festivals around the world\, at venues including The Jewish Museum\, the Toronto Shorts International Film Festival\, the Invisible Dog Art Center\, The UK Jewish Film Festival\, Winkleman Gallery\, The Bronx Museum\, Foley Gallery\, The Ackland Art Museum\, The Moscow Jewish Film Festival\, Davidson Gallery\, The Cannes Short Film Festival\, Yale University\, The New York Jewish Film Festival\, and Denny Dimin Gallery. Danielle’s work has been discussed in The Huffington Post\, Hyperallergic\, The Independent\, The Forward\, and The New York Observer\, among others. She is a selected fellow of the New Jewish Culture Fellowship\, and a grant recipient from the inaugural cycle of the NYFA Women’s Fund for Media\, Music\, and Theatre. This trip provides an opportunity for our students to further their learning about the Holocaust while bonding with their peers and connecting to the BJ community outside of the classroom. We will visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, tour monuments\, celebrate Shabbat together\, and learn and reflect on our experiences. \nIn order to maximize our time and ensure a meaningful experience\, we will be leaving Friday morning\, March 4\, 2022 at 7:15AM. We will return from Washington DC on Sunday\, March 6 around 6:30PM. \n \nThis program is included for all students enrolled in Haverim ‘20-’21 (current 8th grade) and ‘21-’22 (current 7th grade)\, or can be purchased for $450. We hope you will consider joining us for this special trip! \nRegistration closed Tuesday\, November 23\, 2021.  \n  \nWhat are our Covid Protocols for this trip? \nThis plan has been formulated based on guidelines from the CDC\, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)\, and our peer programs\, building upon BJ’s Re-entry Task Force August report and campus operations plan.
