DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Hebrew immersion class geared toward children 3- and 4-years old. Shira Averbuch will lead children with their parents and caregivers in music\, stories\, and movement. Children will gain a sense of community rooted in Jewish tradition while gaining exposure to Israeli culture. \nPrice for Fall Series (15 sessions): \n\nMembers: $20/session or $215/Fall series \nNon-Members: $30/session or $320/Fall series\n\nRegister Now\nNo one will be turned away due to financial reasons. If you are a member with a child 3 or 4 years old and new to Shirah with Shira\, you are eligible for one free semester (or series). Please contact Tobie with any questions or for more details. \nPlease note\, that due to our COVID safety protocol\, we will be limiting the Fall series to 10 children. The program will take place in the Middle Room on the first floor with plenty of space between participants. SUMMARY:How a Jewish Initiative Started in the Slums of Mumbai
DESCRIPTION:Following Arvit\, join Jacob Sztokman\, founder of the Gabriel Project Mumbai\, to be moved by the Jewishly-inspired work his organization is doing to support some of the world’s most vulnerable families in the slums and underserved villages in India. Jacob will share his journey from high-tech executive to founding a development NGO in India that partners with Kivunim\, JDC\, JFNA\, Nativ\, Young Judaea\, Chabad\, and others.  \nJoin Us on Zoom\nJacob Sztokman is a hi-tech executive turned social-entrepreneur. On a visit to Mumbai in 2011\, Jacob toured the city’s slums and was deeply moved to work on the issues of poverty and illiteracy among the children of India. Troubled by what he saw and motivated to help make a difference\, Jacob consulted with grassroots Indian NGOs and created a holistic model of community development combining urban and rural underserved communities in India. The community led initiatives focus on education\, nutrition\, hygiene\, water health care\, and livelihood.  \nJacob was born in Melbourne\, Australia\, and immigrated to Israel in 1993. Jacob’s professional life has been in the world of sales and marketing in Israel. Jacob has a Masters degree in community development  from  Hebrew University\, and is on track to complete his Masters in nonprofit management from Gratz University. Jacob brings to Gabriel Project Mumbai a unique combination of management experience and deep commitment to social justice. He is driven by the fundamental belief that we must take responsibility to help alleviate human suffering around the world. He and his wife\, Elana\, live in Israel with their four children and two newly minted grandchildren.

DESCRIPTION:This course offers an overview of the core beliefs\, practices\, and history of Judaism and the Jewish people. We hope to deepen the understanding of those just beginning to explore Jewish life as well as of those who would like to participate more fully in the life of the Jewish community. No prior knowledge or experience necessary. \nThis course started October 12\, 2021\, and will go until May 2022. The class will be virtual\, with optional in-person offerings. Join fellow 20s and 30s for a series exploring the intersection of Social Justice and Art. Each session stands alone so you are invited to join us for some or all of them.  \nAdmission for this program is pay what you can. You are still welcome!  \nRegister Now\n  \nSession 1: Virtual Museum Visit and Discussion  \nJoin us as we explore the virtual exhibit Activism\, New York featured at the Museum for the City of New York and meet Jenna from the Jewish Museum\, followed by small group discussions. \nOur Presenter: \nJenna Weiss currently serves as Manager of Public Programs at the Jewish Museum\, where she is responsible for the conception and implementation of diverse and rigorous temporary exhibition and collection related programming for adult audiences. Joining the staff in 2012 during a transition to new leadership has given her the ability to be part of this organization as it continues to reexamine\, broaden and investigate the locus of art and Jewish culture.\nWeiss previously held positions in Museum Education as the Spiegel Fellow at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia\, and as Visitor Services Coordinator of the Rose Museum of Contemporary Art at Brandeis University. She has taught courses in painting and drawing as an Adjunct Lecturer at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University and Caldwell College\, Caldwell\, NJ. She holds a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Brandeis University\, and earned her MFA in Painting at Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. She is an alum of Asylum Arts\, a global network of Jewish Artists\, Schusterman Foundation ROI Summit\, and Getty Leadership Institute\, NextGen 2019. In addition to her work in Museums\, Weiss maintains an active studio practice and has been a resident of the Chashama Space to Create program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park since 2011.
